Lift generated by the wings most likely. Although in truth the lift is actually lower air pressure above the wing so in effect it is sucked off the ground.

We had an Il76 (Candid) in at Waddington last summer to transport a Nimrod fuselage up to BAE Woodford. It were alright I suppose but up and away at the mid point of the runway. They even stopped the traffic on the A15 for it's taxi out, I was on the fence and the wingtip didn't even reach me. Gutted I was.

Did it have the shock and awe factor of the vulcan tvoc??

Unfortunately even the mighty Vulcan is somewhat subdued in flight (when it gets the chance) these days and it will in all probability never be displayed at anything close to pre '92 levels again. It requires a mod to the wing leading edge to go much beyond it's present tame routine and that's not envisaged as being in the budget at the present difficult times.

Still mightily impressive on take off though.

Like i posted previously mate that day at RAF Church fenton with live with me forever.
I loved the whole event but the stand out was the Vulcan fly over and my first viewing of the red arrows.
