But the way he and Lowes ripped into the video ref after the game was most certainly not.

I have always thought that he has come across as a very like able and magnanimous person. He always seems to give the opposition the respect they deserve. He is obviously a great coach and I think he will finally be the one to make Warrington realise their full potential.

| I would have given the try Rovers fan or not the referee had not called held and his ball carrying arm had not touched the deck. Salford vs Hull FC a fair few years ago the ref called held then went to the video ref because the player fell off the tackle and the ball was grounded over the line the video ref gave it. In that situation it was wrong because held had been called before the grounding in this instance Silverwood hadn't.
Can understand Smith and Lowes frustrations at that time of the game it would have been a crucial score and could have changed the flow of the game.

Shouldnt matter if he had stopped the ball carrying arm had not hit the deck and the referee hadn't called held so try was or should have been the only option left open to him.
I may be wrong here but I think the only time a video referee can adjudge a tackle to be completed is when the ball carrying arm has touched the floor.
I am not saying I agree with the rules I just think that Warrington were hard done to on that call after what has happened in the past.
Although rather different if we go back to the NRC Final in Blackpool where I think it was Scott Murrell was being tackled but in the motion of passing the ball his ball carrying hand brushed the grass and he was done for passing off the floor yet the tackle was not complete. This in real time should have been a try but on the video replay by the letter of the law it had to be chalked off.
I just guess it goes back to Justins old line of "things even themselves up over the season" and you cant disagree with that we've had our fair share of tries not given this year.

That is why the try should have stood. The VR cannot call a tackle held unless the elbow has touched the floor and being as Silverwood had not called held, the try should have stood. If Silverwood had called held he would have just awarded Rovers a penalty for what would effectivelty have been a double movement and would have had no need to use the VR.
I reckon Silverwood only went to the VR to check the grounding in all honesty.

I wouldnt say any part of Cooke's arm or hand touched the floor in that motion and I have seen it a few times on telly. I think it was millimeters away from touching but never made contact.

| Anyone remember when we had a try disallowed in the NRC final when Scott Murrell's hand brushed a blade of grass while he was offloading?
With the Higham thing, if he'd have been 2 feet further and in the actual in-goal area, would he have been called held up or is he allowed to 2 goes at grounding the ball?

I Sky+ the Super League Show. Richard Silverwood asked Bentham "to check the grounding because the posts were in his way" and he appears to add the comment "the tackle was completed" I presume he wanted a ruling on the grounding to decide if it was the second tackle or if penalty was in order.

| I've just watched it again, and clear as anything, Silverwood says
"Just check the grounding, I can't see for the posts Steve, the tackle was complete".
So the VR knows the tackle is complete, he checks the video, sees that Highams momentum has stopped, Fitzy droppes of him, then he puts the ball down.
Double movement, No try!
Silverwood screwed up by not calling held, but the VR gave the right decision with the info he had, don't forget he can't hear whats being shouted, only what the ref tells him.

| He is undoubtedly a good coach, but I don't think it's right that he can coach club and country and some people have lost a bit of respect for him. Isn't it strange that they recently signed two players on the verge of becoming regular England internationals? Hmmm.

It had to be given as a try because as i understand it the VR cannot deem a tackle complete unless there is clear evidence ie ball carrying elbow touching the floor. Silverwood not calling held meant the only decision the VR could give was a try.
There are many instances of momentum seemingly being stopped in the tackle only for the ball carrier to go with a second effort. The completion of the tackle is the refs call only. He did not call held, so the try should have been awarded, imho.

No mention of the Referee having to call held in the Rules.
Perhaps Silverwood was of the opinion Higham was succumbing to the tackle.

in such a manner that he can make no further
progress and cannot part with the ball.
Succumbing (c) when, being held by an opponent, the tackled
player makes it evident that he has succumbed to
the tackle and wishes to be released in order to
play the ball.

if you was in australia almost a year ago you'd know that he can't coach a country. The man is an excellent club coach but the shambles from top to bottom that was the england team last year showed he is one of the worst national coaches we've ever had and a I fear the worst again for the 4 nations ( mind you at least we'll win the france game!)
