Gateshead, Sunderland, Chester Le Street, Hexham, Durham is only a short train ride, should be plenty of options.

that is the problem with websites, it's like when you try and book 8 flights or more, they see the demand and the price rockets.

for that number of rooms I'd try going direct to a bigger local hotel somewhere.

Too slow I am afraid, I got rooms just outside the metro centre on the day it was announced and paying £530ish for 4 rooms from Fri to sunday. Works out at £65 each per person for the weekend.

From prev experience you have to get on hotels straight away at magic weekend. Its the only event you do, if not you will be left to those who cotton on and up prices or the generally more expensive ones.
