That's the [iminimum[/i mate, try running it on 512MB and see how you get on (in fact, try buying anything below 2GB memory and you'll be struggling, Windows 7 needs 1.7GB to even run,) and you wont buy a DVD drive below 12 speed nowadays.
What else do you need the laptop for, that's probably more important.
for £400 you'll get something adequate, and remember, above 3.6GB you need a 64 bit O/S (which the games are not, as yet, built for)

Depends when you want to buy it mate, personally I always go down the PC World route, somewhere to get angry and shouty if it doesn't work.
You're looking at a 3GB laptop, whatever processor (not a lot to chose between them for what you are after), many people spend way more on a laptop than they need, a "reccommended" games laptop comes in over £1000

| I have an Acer Aspire 7540,
AMD ATHLON 2 x2 processor running 64 bit windows 7, 4gb ram, 320gb HD, 17.3" HD Screen, ATi Radeon HD 4200 Graphics.
Cost me £400, including extended warranty, ran FM2010 like a dream but as Standee says, if you want games buy an Xbox or PS3 as a good gaming laptop will cost you over £1,000.

If it's an integrated graphics card it will be usless really. It has to be a specific graphics card. You should get one for that price but you might have to sacrifice other stuff. Some good deals to be had at places like Tesco too, worth looking at.

reports suggest the 9800 could be the fastest card on the market atm but no notable new technology. and a bit pricey. your best on reading reviews on the card you want but make sure the laptop spec can handle it.

| I reckon you'd be better off buying a motherboard, some Ram and a Graphics card off ebay and use a tower.
Unless they purpose of you having a laptop is so you can be mobile.

| buying a pc/laptop is all about balance really. as others have said you really need minimum 3gb memory nowadays. if you are gaming you need a decent processor and in conjunction a fast graphics card (for gaming steer well clear of integrated graphics). also don't forget you will need a windows 7 operating system which eats up a lot of memory too. for the money you have, a pc would come better specced but you have said you want a laptop so use the websites mentioned or save another couple of hundred.
but don't forget you can alter the setting of some of the games (frame rates etc) so games can be made playable on lower specced pcs
one final point if you are adding a super duper graphics card make sure you power supply unit is up to the task - its a relatively cheap component but one thats often overlooked

depends on the operating system you want on it, if win 7 best off with a 3 gb ram laptopas others have said.
Have bought laptops from here for work reasonable prices, local and good customer help systems as you can chat to them live and they will be able to help you.

sounds like you need a netbook - have a look at dabs or ebuyer (other websites are available) - its basically a cut down version of a laptop, you get a lot of surfing power, wireless facility and decent storage and usb connections so you can add peripherals such as a card reader for your piccies. what you dont get is a cd/dvdrom drive and of course the screen is smaller than that of a laptop
