It's not really. He will be signed principally as a hooker and will share the role with Houghton, which is good news as I don't think Washy is the answer there and Houghton cannot do the full 80 mins every week. We will still need a backup hooker next season as Newton will probably not be ready so a 2 year deal makes sense. He can also play as a back up to Horne/Long which is useful cover to have but it won't affect our recruitment of halfbacks for next season.

As a hooker signing it makes good sense to me. He will come off the bench and add some spark and Houghton will get rest. He is experienced and won't need much time to settle in as he has been playing SL a while.

Not the best halfback but he will only be there when we have injuries and as a bench hooker I think he will do a good job.

No more than last season, Cusack goes, we get Phelps, Berrigan goes we get Obst.

dont understand the negative reaction regarding obst signing.he always looks a good ,tricky player to me.has a bit of flair hull sadly lack and will provide cover at half back or hooker.

No not at any point, you beat what became a very poor team deal with it...Yesterday you were indeed a better team than us no doubt about it...however it is a long season ahead so a bit premature to suggest you are the better team overall this season.

Not after 10 minutes, but after kept giving the ball away and defending more then attacking. More defending makes the team more tired, it's not rocket science. We shot ourselves and you capitalised.

I am fully aware it is a 80 mins game, we played very poor rugby for the last 50/60 mins, you played just a bit better than us and quite rightly won the game.

At first I thought 2 years was to much but if he's signed as a hooker first and half back cover second it's not to bad . Not as though we have a second hooker this season or next so it's not a bad signing . Thing is were signing players season after season with no change so sooner or later the board must think about changing the coach .

Spot on, I don't know why some are so negative, he's everything you've said. It's not grasping at straws or any of those things, Sam Obst knows the game here and will quickly adapt to the side. I'm sure Houghton & Co, are breathing a sigh of relief because, to go through many more matches without a replacement would surely burn them up, then where would we be. Just because we have'nt got a world superstar does not mean there are not any positives, there are plenty.

As long as he played mainly as bench hooker and he doesn't count on the quota it is a decent signing.

I'm sure that Hull wanted him on h a 1 year deal but I doubt he would have come for that.

He and Phelps will give the squad much better balance and cover.
