I stopped buying the Wakefield Express a few year ago due to the paper being bias against all things Wakefield Trinity. Today I decided to buy a copy just to see their coverage of the first Conservative MP in Wakefield for 87 years, and just to confirm why I stopped buying the paper the main headline on the front page read BLAZE RIPS THROUGH CHIPPY. That's all this papers fit for, wrapping fish and chips.

TBF it stopped being the Express years ago when it became part of a publishing group. That said I think its coverage is decent but its actual support for the club very limited as you'd expect for a glorified advert sheet.

Some call it progress but it's all just a bit sad and a sign of the times.

I suspect these days its all about online delivery and less about paper sheets.
That doesn't explain entirely the demise of the WE, it was going south a long time before digital media took the jam out of the doughnut.

Strange that because the WE is owned by Johnstone Press who own "Local" newspapers all over the UK and they support the Tory party. They also own the Yorkshire Post, which is Tory biased. I remember buying the Yorkshire Evening Post "Wakefield and Five Towns edition some years ago. The rear pages were all about Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos, for heaven's sake.

The WE hasn't been readable since it went to tabloid format, and stopped being a real newspaper, many years ago, using insipid color printing. It is (was) printed in Sheffield, and employs about 5 people in their Northgate office. Is the office still there, by the way, or have they moved out of the city altogether?

Was a nice paper when fully based on Southgate. Used to get all the young reporters in The Mitre at lunch time. Was it Frank Jeffries who was the Sports Correspondent back in the 70's ? A young guy called John Fieldhouse took over when FJ retired and I travelled with him to a few away games and got entry on his Press Pass. It was far more believable than when I use to use Michael Hunte's players pass.
A few were key members of The Mitre Quiz Team too.

A few years back a few of my mates came up with a scam. They printed up some ID cards calling themselves HM Inspectors of Asian Cuisine and they used that name along with Rick Shaw and another one I forget.

Did it work? Believe it or not yes a few times though only every in the lower end restaurants. I suspect they feared it was as much to do with illegals as health but hey.

Having said that I haven't bough the WE for years, again, largely due to their unwillingness to support Trinity's cause.
With WMDC providing much of their advertising income through job advertising and planning stuff, they would never side wit the club over the local council.
Whether this was the reason for not supporting Trinity, I've no idea but, they have never backed to club, never.
