| I think the majority of us agree we are really happy with Hampshire but to take us to the next level we need a half with an exceptional kicking and organisation game, likely an Aussie/overseas player. That said it 'may be' that Hampshire will be our starting scrum half now next year. This thread isn't to debate Hampshire but to understand our quota situation.
We were all under the impression Arona was making way to create a quota spot. The fan theory was to create a spot for an overseas scrumhalf, however with the fantastic news we have resigned Arona and are working on keeping Hampshire it got me thinking of our quota situation and what the quota actually is
My understanding is we can have 3 Australians/Kiwis
And 4 Non federation trained
Which would be South Sea Islanders / Kolpaks etc
Which means a total of 7 overseas players
Can any one who has managed to keep up with how the SL quota situation over the years confirm who in are team qualifies as what?
I have had a go below:
3 Bill Tupou OS Tonga
6 Jacob Miller OS Aussie
8 David Fifita OS Aussie/Tonga
13 Tyler Randell OS Aussie
14 Justin Horo OS Kiwi
15 Pauli Pauli OS Aussie/Samoa
16 Tinirau Arona OS Cook Island

| I know you can't marry the two together but Hampshire is a very good goal kicker, so he knows where he wants the ball to go.
I'd like to think he can add accurate open play kicking to his repertoire.

| I'm sure it's something Hampshire could practice in the off season he's got 4/5 months to master it

| I do like Hampshire and Miller, but do think we need that extra option, just in case either get injured or lose form; it provides that extra option.
I think the two have really gelled well, and hope that one of them can add those organising skills to their bow. With them going well together it may be more a case of a back up one now, and maybe even a young up and coming player could well fit the bill.
Chris Atkin at Hull KR has been a prime example of a young player ready to make that step from Championship to Super League, and take it in how stride

| Not 100% sure, but I think you’re right Tricky.
Careful on quoting any possible names though as it looks like Chissitt is having a pop at Eastern, for some of his half back rumours.
Don’t think we’re allowed to do that anymore on here without someone having a pop about someone. Isn’t that part of what some of these forums are for

| Not quota related but maybe we could have a rumours or 'players who realistically you'd like to join' sticky, I think the Wigan board have one.

That's exactly what they are for, that's why I have a different view to your uncle on the subject of half backs, or does that only apply when your in agreement with one side of the discussion, thanks for the sarcasm btw just love it.

Very much agree with that and would be ideal
As long as it's not derailed by the usual culprits

I have no problem doing it but we don't seem to bother with stickies on this forum. No one looks above the recent threads so it just gets started as a new one.

I have a feeling that the quota/non-federation trained rules changed and there is now no difference between the two.
I think clubs are allowed a maximum of 7 non-fed trained players.
So for us I would make that: (Not 100% on all the dates but I think they're right)
Bill Tupou - 2020
Jacob Miller - 2022
David Fifita - 2019 (option for another year)
Tyler Randell - 2019
Justin Horo - 2019
Pauli Pauli - 2019
Tinrau Arona - 2019 (option for another year)

| Don`t know too much regarding the non-fed ruling tbh, I have seen some talking about Josh Drinkwater having a German passport but I think this just means that he would not have to go through the Visa process but would still count as non-fed.
With Robert Elstone coming in and shaking things up a little I wonder if there could be some changes coming, in the way of increasing the quota. The wrong option and a step backwards in my opinion in terms of development etc however we have seen stranger things happen over the years.
Maybe there is an British based half back that has become available? I know Catalan were after Matty Smith but after Drinkwater showing how good a fit he is there they may have pulled out, leaving St Helens with a half sat on the cap they are not going to use. Not the perfect option but proven, experienced and an above average kicking game which is the missing piece in the Wakefield jigsaw for me.

| According to the propper sport team smith to Catalan is a done deal
No news on a drinkwater contract extension at Catalan either
If he was staying there I would have expected him to already be tied into a contract by now
