Saw a Pirtek van in my street this week.

It’s happening.

Will the piping be black?

Or even the traditional Cherry & White hoops with the Ancient & Loyal badge showing the "150th Anniversity" on it.

Now that would be a best seller, especially if there was no "Costa Coffee" badge depicting a old tired looking Viking on it!

I would even buy one myself!

I won't be parting with any money for any merchandise with that awful badge on it. It's not for me and never will be. That's not Wigan RL. It's just one of the catalogue of errors the club has made in the last few years to disengage the fans from the club.

It doesn’t seem to have done them too much harm if the comments about hugely increased merchandise sales are to be believed.

Each to their own but the badge has been the least of my worries this past year or two. I don’t sit watching Saints pack embarrass us (yet again) thinking ‘if only we had the old badge’ on our shirts.

It indeed true, perhaps there would have been even been bigger sales, if a better designed badge showing a proper Warrior on a shield instead of a old tired looking Viking on what has been described as a "Costa Coffee" badge.

Perhaps, the person who designed it was in a Costa Coffee outlet which give him the idea for the design!

He sure was laughing all the way to the bank when he was paid!

The socks appear to be Cherry with White hoops. A solid start.

It could be the best shirt in years but all we will hear is about the badge.
The club should sell cotton patches of the crest for an extra tenner that can be sewn on. Financial worries would be over in a fortnight.

It's not like the club just changed the badge and have said nowt since. They have given very in depth answers as to why the badge was changed and how the new badge was designed.
Plus they still intend to use the old badge in the future for special merchandise.

Baffles me how any supporter could have read all the information put forward by the club and not back the change, or at least accept it as a bare minimum.

Also worth noting that the club didn't really have much of a say in it either, it was pushed by the league, Hence the rebranding of multiple teams in the last couple of seasons.

I completely and utterly hate the badge and it's impacted, in a negative way, my perception of the club. If that makes me a bad fan, so be it.

I've mentioned it a few times, but I work in Marketing and I fully understand the reasons and the 'digital' world that lead to the change. I absolutely despise the creative and concept of it tho.

If the original badge was too busy or complex to be used across a number or platforms, then make it more subtle etc. Don't just get rid of 150 years of heritage for a Costa coffee rip off and a Viking. Look at the work the Premier League did with their badge, which ironically enough was done by the same agency, Nomad. It's a nod both to the past and the future of PL, keeps some of the brand equity and is on trend with modern colorful, simple badges/logos.

I'd go as far as to say that Latics badge represents Wigan more than what ours does & that saddens me. Take a min to look at it and tell me we couldn't have incorporated the castle, crown or lions etc.

Fair, you are entitled to your opinion. As somebody who works in marketing i assume that you read all of the press releases and information given from the club? So as you should know, it is not a viking on the badge with no cultural relevance to wigan, it is a brigante warrior which if you delve into history does have cultural relevance to wigan. I also thought the incorporation of W's (wigan warriors) on either side to create the beard was quite a subtle and clever addition.

Do i think it could have been better and, as you say, included nods to the old badge? Probably yes, but it's far too minor of an issue for me to have any major issues with the club over it (who as stated, didn't really get much choice in the matter either). I would have to question however, if this is enough to tip somebody over the edge in there financial support of the club (as many people across social media seem to claim it has done) were those people too close to the edge and would have fell off the cliff soon regardless?

For the record, the badge that somebody made incorporating the castle and went around social media is better imo, i think it is egg chasing has it as there pic? I wonder if that would have been a happy medium that everybody could have got behind, or whether it just became convenient ammuniton for people to throw back at the club. Would people get behind that design any more then the current one? I have my doubts personally.

I actually like the new badge but I think the lack of engagement has led to some disappointment, was it a panel of 12 that were consulted?

I have to admit that I was being obtuse with the Viking comment. I read the press release, watched the videos on the micro site - I just don't agree.

Like I said in my OP, others won't agree and some either don't care about the little things, or attribute little stock to their significance. There's plenty of people who focus on the big stuff and that's completely fine. If the badge changes, or the club don't update the website they don't care as long as we win at the weekend. Neither are right or wrong. I fully believe in stuff like compound effect tho (small choices + consistency + time = significant results) and it bugs the hell out of me that the website isn't right, or the badge isn't right (imo), that they are behind on communications, or the ticketing system falls down when something is launched. Get the little things right, have the highest standards across everything and take ownership.

Yes there is no defending our site. As a professional sports team it is a disgrace how often it is neglected and incorrect. I am hoping with a new marketing director coming in, things like this will be ironed out and the club will make more effort to look professional to outsiders.

I didn’t like the badge one bit when it was released but I must admit I’ve come around a bit to it though that may be because it was on the first kit my son had so perhaps sentimental? I’m not sure.

But it’s the least of my worries. The standards at the club which as recent as 2018 that were sky high have plummeted. I agree completely with the second paragraph. The club is trying so hard to get the big things right (which they’re making a right royal mess of as well) the club has forgotten the small things - and things they :3oajkik4promised ” posts on social media whilst other clubs are making real convincing marketing ploys and posts, hell Warrington’s are that good they make me want to buy a ticket! And in all honesty if I wasn’t a Wigan fan I would be doing.

Whilst other clubs are signing good players we’re bringing in the likes of Thornley, targeting Miller. I mean, seriously? It’s frustrating to see how low our standards have become. Something which I’m amazed is still allowed to happen with SW back at the club. I’m far, far from calling for IFL to go, a bit less far away calling for Rads but something has to change. I get it’s been tough financially but surely there’s enough in the pot to invest in proper marketing, proper social media, proper website developers? Get that right and we bring in more fans which brings in more money, more money, better players and so on and so forth.

I said a few months ago something like “we have a bright future” and we still could do but panic scrambling around for a halfback when we’ve known full well since JH signed he’d be off to the NRL when his contact expired is almost unforgivable.

It is not just the changing of the badge from a Coat of Arms design that is upsetting many supporters, but the design which has been produced which leaves a lot to be desired when compared to other club badges of other Rugby League, Rugby Union and even Football clubs.

A old tired looking Viking on what some are describing as looking like a 'Costa Coffee" badge is poor compared to having a badge depicting a bold fearsome Warrior looking as he is ready to go into battle.

And how on earth could a Viking be the choice of a Wigan Warrior when the Widnes club are the Vikings?

Some are easily pleased, if they think that the design is a good one!
