| Quote ="billys pineapple"The tackling would need to be made up jointly by Tommy, Morgan and the rest of the pack making 2 or three more tackles each per player per game, it is after all more of a team game and everyone needs to contribute.
A hooker is not just there as a tackling machine ask James Roby,he makes a similar amount of tackles.
Sams attacking game has never progressed and the majority of posters on here feel that we will not progress until it does or a change is made.
I understand the points you make about last season, but lets be honest it could have been so much better attacking wise, anybody watching could see that, there was very little dynamism within our structure.
AL wants us to be more attacking and play off the cuff, I don't believe we can do that until we get more go forward from dummy half.'"
I agree about Sam's lack of attack. But has it massively effected us? Not really looking at the back end of last season. I worry people are paying more attention to what he doesn't do rather than want he does. By covering so much ground defensively he takes the weight off the middle unit by such a high work rate. It seems like you are looking to remove this element in hope that Tommy, at 33 turning 34 this year to get through more work and still be creative? And then you expect Escare to come on and make up the extra defensive work when he's no where near the defender Sam is?
Truth is, I don't think the answer to the 9 issue is at Wigan. We need a 9 who can defend as well as Sam and have the attacking flair. That player needs to be signed. Until we do, I honestly think dropping Powell would cause more issues in a team which can win trophies with him in it, as proven.

Adrian Lam names 19-man squad to face Hull FC on Sunday (KO 3pm)
• Sammut and Byrne replace Clubb and Farrell in 19.
• Manfredi, Farrell, & Burgess miss out due to injuries, Clubb rested.
Wigan Warriors Head Coach Adrian Lam has named his 19-man squad to face Hull FC at the DW Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the Betfred Super League (K.O. 3pm).
The reigning Betfred Super League Champions host Lee Radford’s Hull FC who are without a win in 13 games dating back to June 2018.
Last time the two sides met at the DW Stadium, Wigan edged it in a 14-12 victory back in September 2018 with tries from Gabe Hamlin, Dan Sarginson and Oliver Gildart proving to be the difference.
Wigan Head Coach Adrian Lam said on facing Hull FC, “This game is going to be as tough as the World Club Challenge. They are a team who are desperate to win and desperate teams do desperate things.” (Watch his full match preview on Wigan TV HERE).
On rotating his squad – “Yes I’m looking forward to shuffling a little bit in the next three to four weeks.”
In injury news, it was confirmed earlier this week that Liam Farrell is likely to miss the next four months following a pectoral tear he sustained during last Sunday’s World Club Challenge. Learn more HERE.
Tony Clubb is rested to aid recovery of a mouth injury sustained in Round 1. Recent signing Jarrod Sammut and youngster Liam Byrne are brought into the squad for the first time in 2019 and would make their debuts if selected in the 17 on Sunday.
Lam also gave an update on Dom Manfredi’s recovery from a knee injury – “We will see how he is over the next two weeks. He will probably not play at London due to the pitch there.”
Joe Burgess remains on the comeback trail from a knee injury picked up (ACL) in April 2018.
Wigan’s 19-man squad to face Hull FC:
Joe Bullock, Liam Byrne, Tom Davies, Morgan Escaré, Ben Flower, Oliver Gildart, Joe Greenwood, Gabe Hamlin, Zak Hardaker, Willie Isa, Tommy Leuluai, Liam Marshall, Romain Navarrete, Sean O’Loughlin, Sam Powell, Jarrod Sammut, Dan Sarginson, Taulima Tautai, George Williams.

| It was Byrne who absolutely flattened the Salford defender on his first carry in the friendly wasn't it? Good chance for him to make an impression and grab a regular bench spot.

Not convinced Tommy has the same work rate as Sam, think at his age to average over 50 tackles per game would kill him off. Don't know why you think they have a similar work rate.
So who would Escare be coming on for?

| We’ll never know until we try. I agree that Powell works his socks off but I do think we need a bit more than that. If it means 7 other forwards in the squad have to make 2 more tackles each then so be it. Lockers made over 50 tackles against Roosters so it’s not like there’s only Powell capable of doing it.
Sammut’s long kick will potentially be of more benefit to us than anything else and we need to see how he goes over a consistent period in the starting line up. I’d go with Sammut at 7 and Leuluai at 9 with Powell on the bench. ISA to replace Faz and Bullock to start.

I'm talking about his work rate in defence. 50+ tackles per game defending in the middle of the pitch.

| As far as I can see, nobody is disputing Powell’s work rate in defence but he isn’t the only player who does that.
Looking at other hookers in SL, Roby, Houghton, Clarke, McShane etc, they all have big tackle counts every week but bring other attributes to their side as well their defence. That’s where Powell falls short. The overall strength of the side could improve with some changes in personnel and unless we give it a go, we’ll never find out.

The answer to our 9 problem isn't at Wigan. I'd take all each of the names you've mentioned in the list. All strong all-rounders.

| It wouldn't matter if Powell did 9037 tackles every game, The fact is he is a non creative player in a creative position, A little like Sarginson who is a non passing player in a position that relies heavily on passing, Sell them on to Catalans at the end of the season, they can take Tautai, Club and Farrell with them

I agree but they don’t play for us so we have to make the best use of what we have. I believe Leuluai at 9 and Sammut at 7 will just give us another option. Unless we try it, we’ll never know if it improves our attack or makes it worse. The proof is in the pudding as they say.

| One point I’ll always make when people talk about a lack of creativity from Sam Powell is the fact that only Paul McShane made more assists then Powell in superleague last year. That’s not to say I don’t think we can improve in that position and I get he spent some time at scrum half but I’d hazard a guess that at least ten of those assists came from dummy half. Only Roby with 11 got in to double figures from hooker in 2018.

I’ve mentioned that and he stank. If he got more then 2 or 3 assists in at scrum half I’d be stunned. I recall the vast majority of his assists were subtle passes near the opposition line, coming out of dummy half to get the likes of Clubb, Sutton and Flower over the line. Those three had their best seasons in try scoring terms and Sam Powell played a part in that.
As I said though, that’s not to say we can’t improve. Sam Powell has some real limitations in running the ball himself and that means you feel we can recruit somebody to improve us.

| Does anyone know why T T is in the wilderness? He has never been used well by us and I remember the want away rumours of a few weeks back. Either we find a way of utilizing him or we should let him go and bring in someone to improve the team. I still believe that he could do a great job for us.

He’s got to use himself in the right way also and that means applying himself and playing at full tilt every game even when a new contract isn’t in his sights. I’ll be interested to see how he’ll go under Lam and if he can get a bit more effort out of him.
He can be a very good player when he wants to be.

He certainly blows hot and cold. That said, we signed him as a devastating Second Rower then promptly moved him to Prop.
Perhaps he can play Second Row for 4 months now that Farrell is out and Lam is more of a traditional rugby man?

Tautai played the vast majority of his rugby at Wakey at prop but maybe running a little wider then he has here. He doesn’t look fit enough to play in the second row for me. The biggest frustration for me is that he can be a good player on his day but we’ve only really seen that in a spell of a few months when he was in negotiations for a new deal.
