| Quote ="Cruncher"Apparently he was desperate to come to Wigan, but the club kept saying 'no'. Whether because he was asking too much money, or because they didn't rate him compared to the star three-quarters they already had, I'm not sure.
But this decision by Wigan ensured that he would never see much silverware during his career. Probably explains the pathological hatred towards Wigan that he's shown ever since.
Personally, I'd have signed him - but only on the condition that he first shaved off what was surely (and still is) the crappest moustache in the history of facial hair.'"
I remember a testimonial at CP, either Dermott's or Edwards', and at half time they had a kicking comp. There was Botica, Hampo, Schofield and a Latics player. The pop stand was just chanting "Gary Moustache, Gary Moustache, woah, woah" everytime he was kicking. He took it quite well and had a bit of banter with the crowd.

I am not sure about that, apparently we offered him a massive deal for the time and he turned us down to stay loyal to Leeds on a much smaller contract, something that he very much now regrets as I understand it as he never felt his loyalty to Leeds was repaid by the club.

I'm sure I read something he wrote expressing just that. You'd have thought that someone of his talents would have had no shortage of offers.

All 3 paragraphs sadly, for you, are factually incorrect.
As for the 3rd, Kurt Sorenson by plenty.

I cant say I ever really rated him as a player and always though he was overated. He certainly wasnt a patch on the players we had at the time.

Tuigamala and Connolly were our centres at the time, Offiah and Robinson our wingers. We had Edwards, Botica and Henry Paul tossing the stand-off position around between them, and young Kris Radlinski starting to fill in at full-back.
I don't think we needed to be too sad.

Really? Despite that being nigh on 20 years ago.
I see.

| Speaking of Schofield and Wigan, search for "Big fat Garry Schofield" on a well known video site
Apols if referred to already, haven't read the whole thread.

History - Surely you don't need us to tell you that we're the most successful club in world rugby.
Present - We're doing quite nicely at the top of the league at the moment, attendances are on the up (nearly 15,500 average atm),
Future - Our youngsters are sweeping all aside in their competitions - coming through in great numbers.
What's there to be sad about.

So all of a sudden you're not talking about the time when Garry Schofield wanted to join Wigan, and Wigan said 'no'.
In which case, when exactly were we supposed to be sad?

| Quote ="jonh"Sadly on this occasion I agree with Gary Schofield, I think next year could be a very special one for Wigan though.'"
Got to agree - a trophy this year is a big ask bearing in mind what this squad, inherited by MM, achieved last year .... full credit to MM in achieving so much this year.
MM will already be having a big say in the signings for next year and I can't wait to see what this guy will achieve with a squad of his own!
So Gary you may or may not be right on this occassion .... but I will wager you £20 we still finish top of the pile in 2010 ... if you do win then at least you can tell the family that at long last you have say you won something in your Rugby League career.

| I find it strange that we can be good enough to finish top but not good enough to win the GF. Really, the team finishing top is actually the best team in the league, especially under the current fixture format.

Never works that way ask Saints fans.
The team the wins the Grand Final gets remembered not the team that wins the shield.

| Schoey was pretty positive in parts about Wigan I thought. This is the article for those who haven't seen it:
GARRY Schofield, Great Britain's joint-record caps holder, believes that Wigan's only chance of silverware this season is holding on to their top spot and lifting the league leaders' shield.
Commenting after watching Wigan lose at home to St Helens by two points in Sunday's derby game, Schofield said: "Wigan have had a very good season and their recovery from being a mid-table side has been great for Super League.
"But I feel that they've peaked already this season and I'm not sure how much they still have to give. We know that at least one or two of the sides below them will come strong when it really matters.
"Wigan were poor against St Helens and the final score flattered them. Saints were worthy winners and were unlucky not to win by a much wider margin.
"Wigan can be a bit too predictable. It's too easy to read what Sam Tomkins and Thomas Leuluai are going to do sometimes and when teams snuff them out like Saints did, you wonder what else Wigan have got up their sleeve.
"But they have got plenty to be positive about - especially when you look at their recent past. They've come a long way and they're going in the right direction under Michael Maguire and Shaun Wane.
"Mike McIlorum had a very good game and I think he's someone that England should be looking at for the Four Nations. Martin Gleeson is still olur best centre in my opinion and Joel Tomkins has had a great season.
"But this year is too soon for them to be a realistic bet of winning the Grand Final."

| Schofield does have a point, the team have lost 2 games recently against 2 injury ravaged teams (Leeds + St Helens). You will finish top of the league but can you go the distance to get to the final, will the cracks appear in the play offs.

I love it. Stains & Leeds have 5-6 players out and they are "Injury ravaged".
Wigan have 4-5 players out and ......................, suddenly we've past our peak.

| Theres going to be some suprised people around superleague when they see the likes of Phelps, Hansen, O'Loughlin, O'Carroll, Mossop(back today), Roberts etc back in our team and realise we've actually had our fair share of injuries aswell.
It's fantastic that unlike most teams we haven't decided to whinge about it instead choosing to use it as a positive to bring more superb kids in and give them their chance. Injuries have handed opportunites to both Farrell and Tuson in recent weeks and both were excellent again today.
Happy days.
