| I'm loving the comments underneath the article. Especially the rambling comment by "Sean Livesey"
Quote do you really have anyidea what [Latics has acheived? Our equivelant in terms of size of club is a Mansfield or Bury'"
Yes, and the £££ from Uncle Dave wasn't a factor was it?
Quote we have increased our support from an average of 1200 in 1994 to a massive 14000 in 2010'"
"massive"? I believe we averaged 15,000 in 2010
Quote I think you'll find much like Manchester United and Liverpool a lot of the support for the Warriors doesn't actually come from the town of Wigan itsself [sic but indeed from areas that don't have rugby league teams or at least un-successful rugby sides.'"
I think this is my favourite bit. I'd hazard a guess that perhaps a tiny minority of our regular support (ie STHs) comes from outside the Wigan area (perhaps Leyther Matt could shed some light on this). FFS, at the last fans forum IL stated that he wanted to see an increase in support from the Liverpool and Manchester areas.
Finally, I couldn't let "AbramLatic"'s comment on CL go
Quote Local lads v league of nations....yes we'd like to see local lads in our team but....Richards, Barrett etc, very local them lads'"

| To be honest, I thought the original article was nothing more than -stirring.
To start with, Wigan do not need fans to switch over from the Latics. We were getting 16,000 crowds when we were battling relegation and they were riding high. So to suggest that we're only doing it now because Latics are struggling and Wigan are winning trophies again has no foundation whatever.
I personally feel that Dave Whelan's Premiership football experiment in Wigan will come to an end fairly soon. But, though I was deeply concerned that it might take the shine of the Warriors when it first started, I don't think, outside the fantasies of a few wishful thinkers in the national press and among fans at other RL clubs, the evidence has supported this.
We are now cemented into the DW with a long-term lease. We have an insightful chairman, who, as well as taking care of things on the pitch, is taking care of them off it as well. We may occasionally have to step down and switch a fixture if there's a clash, though I don't see that happening too often if Latics get relegated, but aside from that there's no real issue. Latics have their fans, we have ours - there may be a slight overlap here and there whose loyalties may occasionally be divided, but so what? - I bet there are at least as many families on our border who are split down the middle between Wigan and Saints.
In the light of this, all that article has really done is annoy the football crowd (again ) and allow the sort of professional trolls who inhabit sites like TotalRL to call us all fickle.
Wigan RL have been on the receiving end of some truly crap journalism in the last few years. From the local papers, from the nationals, from Sky - and now the MEN is getting in on the act.

And the bad thing about that is that it just doesn't work.
For years, 2 of the clubs that gave the highest amounts of comp tickets out in the Premier League were Wigan and Middlesbrough, and we saw how their crowds fell away. Give people who aren't really that into it free tickets, and they'll take them, but they're unlikely to buy future tickets off the back of it when they know that more free tickets are in the pipeline.

| The vitriol on CL is unbelievable. I’d no idea the posts were so childish, hateful, bitter, etc. I guess it stems from jealousy as we are a big (the biggest) rugby league club and they are only ever going to be an also ran given the way that football is going with money. Yes, their argument that they are a small fish in a much bigger global pond is true, but for how long will they stay in that pond?

You could say that is the company I keep but i think it is more to do with a history of glory.
These are season ticket holders or people who buy a hundred pounds worth of merch and go to about 70% of games. In fact, this season i have met a lot of "new" Wigan fans in my hometown.

Good post.
I think we need to think carefully before jeering at the notion of out-of-town support. Back in the glory days, you could have your Sunday lunch at the Minorca before going down to Central Park, and see trainloads of fans arriving at Wallgate station from Preston on one side and Bolton on the other.
Places like these don't have professional RL clubs, and should be meat and drink to an outfit like Wigan Warriors. The last thing we want to do is mimimise their importance.
If Wigan continue winning, we will see more Wiganers jump on board the bandwagon, because there will always be fair weather supporters. But if you want to recruit a new block of hardcore fans - the sort who could push your average attendance up beyond the 17,000 mark, you might find them in neighbouring towns. Hasn't IL made comments recently about looking towards Manchester?

So many Warrington based Wigan fans? That's surprises me. I won't dispute that Wigan RL's appeal extends beyond the borough of Wigan in a way that Latics doesn't but I've always put that down to 'ex-pat' Wiganers who have moved to places like Bolton, Preston, Leyland, Chorley etc and continue to support the club. Not only that but any kids they've had whilst living in those towns are also likely to claim Wigan RL as their club. If a latics mon moved to those places and had a kid they'd end up following PNE or Bolton. Its seems obvious that when Wiganers move out of town, they & subsequent generations maintain more of an attachment with the rugby club than they do with Latics. The kids & grandkids of exiled Wiganers are attracted to the club their forefathers followed. A club with history, tradition & prestige. Qualities we have in abundance and things Latics men don't even know exist.

| Yeah, out of town support like me!
Born and brought up in Wigan but have not lived in the town for over 30 years.
I am still a season ticket holder as is now, again, my daughter.
To see a game is 60 miles round trip and I pass Goddison and Anfield on the way although I've never been to those places whilst living here on the Wirral.
Years ago we took a couple of friends to Saints to see the Wigan game and they are now season ticket holders. They live approx a mile from us.
In general a lot of out of town fans are like me and us. Have a connection with Wigan which has been built on. As far as I'm concerned, from where I live, I don't care where people live if they come to support Wigan RL. The best thing I can say to people who travel a distance to see the team is "well done you".

Couldn't agree more. We have friends who live in Devon and are Wigan RL fans. They arent' season ticket holders (for obvious reasons) but come to as many home games as they can and never miss a cup draw or play off game wherever it is being played. Fair play I say

| A lot of people have got what I am saying. I think there is that connection with Wigan. This is why I mentioned that it was friends and their immediate family. I think it is passed down through generations.
My friends who support saints are the same. Mother and father support saints and then go the games. It helps that the noughties were a good time for Saints, i tink.

| Regarding the 'out of town' fans. There was a fan survey done a few years ago and the results displayed online which showed that a vast majority of our fans were from outside of Wigan. Just looked for it on the new site but can't find it.
Subsequently, I never filled one in and nor did anyone else I go to games with so not sure how accurate it actually is but there you go.

also know wigan fans in Devon and Hull. couple of my FC supporting friends now have Wigan as their "second team" as does one of my friends from Hull KR. even had a Wire fan coming to games who i think is now a secret Wigan fan!

The only true survey is the address you give when you get a season ticket, and I doubt that would show the same. We do have many out of town fans, but thats a good thing. Big clubs in any sport can attract fans from all over the country.

It really makes me laugh when certain fans try to insult us about this. So what they are saying is we are capable of attracting fans from a wider area? How is that ever a bad thing???

| I'm in Hull but moving back to Leeds where I lived when I was younger. Went to just over half the games last season and hopefully getting season ticket this year. Just because people don't live in Wigan doesn't mean they're not from Wigan. I've only lived there briefly but my dad's from Hindley and got me into rugby, went to my first game when I was 2 in early 83 and been going ever since. Thats's a good enough reason for me to follow Wigan.

Keep Dreamin son. I think their pathetic gates, the fact they would be in for an inevitable tonking against chelsea or man u, and the fact that 90% of the wigan sporting public would either be going to, or watching the WCC would mean they would take less than 10k to that final if they made it!!!
Im sorta hoping it happens, can you imagine the red mist decending when all the media report us as the reason less than 10k soccer fans attend a major final
......AND YET MORE GOLD........
Quote Or maybe, as the writer of the original article suggests, Wigan is indeed turning back into an RL town. If so, what a secular, out of touch, fickle little town we live in. '"
How much bile is there in that little gem If you ask me this is the real reason for all the bitterness from latics fans. Not maurice lindsay or some other made up reason for the start of the feud as they claim, but the fact that soccer is the global game, yet ONLY in wigan it has to play second fiddle to RL. Soccer fans living in wigan HATE this fact as they desperately crave their town to be like the rest of the world.
Thankfully wigan is the oasis in the barren football desert, a fact that actually serves to show the wigan public are educated and excersise free will in their choice of sport, rather than being hearded sheep like the rest of the world, blinkered by the hype the media places in the game, to follow the boring game they are told to follow.

Nail on the head there mon! These men are fuming that despite the fact that they play the biggest sport in the world, in the biggest league in the world, most people in the town are more concerned with rugby. Must be very frustrating for them

Love how they refer to us as chubbies as well, just because our players are not 9 1/2 stone 4ft 6 wet through softies.
Roy Keane the irish 5ft 6 dwarf, 10 stone hard nut!! Have a word!!
Maybe we should call them the skinnies, or the softies!
On second thoughts though, that would show us to be as obsessed and insecure as they are!!

I like this post. I was born and raised 6 miles North Central Park and 2 miles outside the norther most boundary of the town. When I first took an interest in Rugby League Wigan were the natural choice and I have no problem justifying my support of Wigan RL especially given the fact there are plenty of pathetics in the same place. Difference is I KNOW Wigan RL are the only Rugby League team I've ever supported.
I now live in South Warrington and still have no problem justifying my support of the club.

Love how they refer to us as chubbies as well, just because our players are not 9 1/2 stone 4ft 6 wet through softies.
Roy Keane the irish 5ft 6 dwarf, 10 stone hard nut!! Have a word!!
This is definitely true! TBH, I've hardly been to any live football matches, but I did go to the Carling Cup equivalent Wembley finals in 89/90 which were held the day after the CC final.
I got the rugby tickets and a friend got the football tickets - he was a Notts Forest fan, living in London. The disparity in the physique of the majority of the footballers in comparison to the rugby players was quite startling. There were a couple of big centre backs/goalkeepers, but so many were what one might call beanpoles or very "puny". This was also the time when Vinny Jones had the reputation of being a tough nut - the consensus was he wouldn't have lasted 2 minutes playing RL.
With regard to Wigan fans who don't live in Wigan, it would be interesting to ascertain how many fans were born in Wigan but have moved away for work or other reasons. Quite a lot, I would suspect. I myself am a born and bred Wiganer who went to secondary school in Ashton but left home aged 18 in 1976. I've always supported my home town rugby club and have introduced numerous mates to the game in the past 30+ years ( including the Notts Forest fan!) wherever I've lived/been working. I used to fly in for the big games when working in Europe in the mid 80's and was always home for Christmas/New Year/Easter. I would never dream of watching Man Utd, Liverpool or even Blackpool FC which is now my local football team.

Me for one.

Exactly. Wembley from 1984 on was a home game for me! I was working in London from 1981 until 1992/3.
Still made treks back up north for big games and as you mentioned was always home for the bank holidays so watched the games then.
As most people know I live in Chester now but my eldest son is an absolute fanatic Wigan fan despite being born and bred in Cheshire. One of my proudest achievements that he is! You should have seen him at the GF.
