Nice but of lunch time reading to warm your cockles!
menmedia.co.uk/manchesterevening ... _their_own
The pie capital of the world appears to savouring a resurgence in popularity of the famous ‘cherry red’ filling!
When Wigan Athletic gained Premier League status, the appetite was for blue and white as football rode the crest of a wave.
But the tide has again turned and all the ingredients for the balance of power to swing back to the oval-ball game are very much in place with Wigan Super League’s top dogs.
The proof of the pudding will be seen in February when 24 hours after Manchester United’s visit to the DW Stadium, champions Wigan Warriors will stage the World Club challenge.
A clash with the Aussie champs is expected to be a 25,000 sell-out – overshadowing United’s visit for a high profile Premier League clash.
Plenty of Reds are likely to swell that crowd to a degree, but, generally, Latics are struggling to pull bumper crowds.
And club bosses cannot do much more – Latics have the best deal in the Premier League for season tickets and they are a fine welcoming club. Yet an upturn in fortunes for the Warriors has clearly swung the balance of interest.
Wigan is a town hit hard by recession and the people possibly only have enough cash to support one club.
Warriors are already reporting season ticket sales ahead of the new season.
And a sizeable crowd even stood out in the pouring rain for an open training session ahead of the grand final.
It has been said many times that rugby league is a religion in Wigan and the Warriors fans certainly had their prayers answered last season.
They hold the bragging rights – and have more bums on seats.
Fortunately for Latics, last weekend’s derby with Bolton attracted the highest attendance of the season at the DW.
Liverpool are next up so the coffers will be further boosted but an empty stand for the mid-week Carling Cup clash with Swansea confirmed Latics support levels are limited.
Swansea brought more than 4,000 fans from the valleys – a display of support that must make the Latics envious.
In Super League, clubs like Salford relish home games with Wigan Warriors because they know a huge crowd is guaranteed. Warriors fans have again come out of the woodwork and are marching as a force.
Latics rely on their loyal die hards and still have plenty of support outside Wigan.
Maybe former Latics supporter Barry Knowles, a Wigan lad, hit the nail on the head when he said possibly more people would watch Latics if more local lads were in the team.
Latics have become a league of nations squad under Roberto Martinez whereas Wigan Warriors have again nurtured home grown heroes in plentiful supply

| Good post, I do disagree with "Warriors fans have again come out of the woodwork and are marching as a force." It makes out like the crowds were lacking in years gone by when we were struggling.
I understand a bit of journalistic imagery must be used but I think that's doing us a slight disservice.
I also happen to disagree that if Latics had more Wigan lads in their team, then they'd be better supported. The truth of the matter is that Wigan produced Rugby players by the bucket load and of great quality. Whereas Wigan might produce 1 or 2 football players deemed worthy of Premier League football every few years. It is much cheaper to buy the foreigners in as that is the way Football is going.

Maybe it means we'll have even bigger crowds next season and get close to IL's dream of 20k average attendances!

They are just not realistic about it, if I were them I would be worried and be getting onto the club to do something about it. Imagine how bad it will get if they get relegated, they probably won't get above 10k and we will be around the 17k mark on a regular basis without good away support.

It wasn't above 10k before they came up. The club has done everything they possibly can to build support but the support isn't there for Football in Wigan, never has been. They had an initial surge of interest when they got promoted, probably helped by the Rugby being in dire straits at the time, but that interest has gone.
Having said that - not been for a while but I reckon they are doing far, far better than the Rugby at getting the 10-20 age bracket into their games that we are. I'd bet the average age of a Wigan Warriors supporter is way higher than that of Latics. Perhaps the Rugby side should be worried that its support base is getting pretty old?

To counter that, I'd say Wigan RL have a higher ratio of 1-9 year olds, based on the fact that the South Stand (the unofficial family stand) is almost empty for the games I've seen on tv highlights over the last few seasons.

If thats the case then those 10-20 year olds will not carry on going when the team is relegated. The ones I know from high school and College etc. used to support one of the big clubs and only go to watch some football.
Wigan Athletic give free tickets out for most home games to people of that age group. Every month I used to be able to get free tickets for latics at Deanery!

| I'm loving the comments underneath the article. Especially the rambling comment by "Sean Livesey"
Quote do you really have anyidea what [Latics has acheived? Our equivelant in terms of size of club is a Mansfield or Bury'"
Yes, and the £££ from Uncle Dave wasn't a factor was it?
Quote we have increased our support from an average of 1200 in 1994 to a massive 14000 in 2010'"
"massive"? I believe we averaged 15,000 in 2010
Quote I think you'll find much like Manchester United and Liverpool a lot of the support for the Warriors doesn't actually come from the town of Wigan itsself [sic but indeed from areas that don't have rugby league teams or at least un-successful rugby sides.'"
I think this is my favourite bit. I'd hazard a guess that perhaps a tiny minority of our regular support (ie STHs) comes from outside the Wigan area (perhaps Leyther Matt could shed some light on this). FFS, at the last fans forum IL stated that he wanted to see an increase in support from the Liverpool and Manchester areas.
Finally, I couldn't let "AbramLatic"'s comment on CL go
Quote Local lads v league of nations....yes we'd like to see local lads in our team but....Richards, Barrett etc, very local them lads'"

| To be honest, I thought the original article was nothing more than -stirring.
To start with, Wigan do not need fans to switch over from the Latics. We were getting 16,000 crowds when we were battling relegation and they were riding high. So to suggest that we're only doing it now because Latics are struggling and Wigan are winning trophies again has no foundation whatever.
I personally feel that Dave Whelan's Premiership football experiment in Wigan will come to an end fairly soon. But, though I was deeply concerned that it might take the shine of the Warriors when it first started, I don't think, outside the fantasies of a few wishful thinkers in the national press and among fans at other RL clubs, the evidence has supported this.
We are now cemented into the DW with a long-term lease. We have an insightful chairman, who, as well as taking care of things on the pitch, is taking care of them off it as well. We may occasionally have to step down and switch a fixture if there's a clash, though I don't see that happening too often if Latics get relegated, but aside from that there's no real issue. Latics have their fans, we have ours - there may be a slight overlap here and there whose loyalties may occasionally be divided, but so what? - I bet there are at least as many families on our border who are split down the middle between Wigan and Saints.
In the light of this, all that article has really done is annoy the football crowd (again ) and allow the sort of professional trolls who inhabit sites like TotalRL to call us all fickle.
Wigan RL have been on the receiving end of some truly crap journalism in the last few years. From the local papers, from the nationals, from Sky - and now the MEN is getting in on the act.

And the bad thing about that is that it just doesn't work.
For years, 2 of the clubs that gave the highest amounts of comp tickets out in the Premier League were Wigan and Middlesbrough, and we saw how their crowds fell away. Give people who aren't really that into it free tickets, and they'll take them, but they're unlikely to buy future tickets off the back of it when they know that more free tickets are in the pipeline.

| The vitriol on CL is unbelievable. I’d no idea the posts were so childish, hateful, bitter, etc. I guess it stems from jealousy as we are a big (the biggest) rugby league club and they are only ever going to be an also ran given the way that football is going with money. Yes, their argument that they are a small fish in a much bigger global pond is true, but for how long will they stay in that pond?

Do you come from/ live in Wigan?
I come from Warrington and live in Hull.
My school friends, who are passionate about Rugby (17-23) all support Wigan. Even more so out of my close friends and their immediate families there are about 20-30 Wigan supporters, about 5 saints supporters and 2 or 3 Wire supporters.
You could say that is the company I keep but i think it is more to do with a history of glory.
These are season ticket holders or people who buy a hundred pounds worth of merch and go to about 70% of games. In fact, this season i have met a lot of "new" Wigan fans in my hometown.
You could put that down to success (which I'd never take away from you [even if i could

Good post.
I think we need to think carefully before jeering at the notion of out-of-town support. Back in the glory days, you could have your Sunday lunch at the Minorca before going down to Central Park, and see trainloads of fans arriving at Wallgate station from Preston on one side and Bolton on the other.
Places like these don't have professional RL clubs, and should be meat and drink to an outfit like Wigan Warriors. The last thing we want to do is mimimise their importance.
If Wigan continue winning, we will see more Wiganers jump on board the bandwagon, because there will always be fair weather supporters. But if you want to recruit a new block of hardcore fans - the sort who could push your average attendance up beyond the 17,000 mark, you might find them in neighbouring towns. Hasn't IL made comments recently about looking towards Manchester?
