it would have been great PR for RL if Dixon had been given a place in the full England World Cup squad in the same way Theo Walcott was some years ago by the F.A. But that would require a sophisticated governing body!

Walcott didn't play and it was a waste of squad place. Erikson had so little confidence in him that even as we were going out and badly in need of some X factor, he didn't even think that bunging on Walcott for the last 20 minutes was worth a shot.

Not a good example of a decent governing body (not that the FA made that decision).

The point I was trying to make was that putting Dixon in the squad would have been great PR, and may have got the game a few national headlines which it needs.

I doubt it. The reason why the Walcott story was headline news was that enough people cared about the team selection and knew enough about soccer to find it a bizarre decision. Neither is really true of RL.

The RFL claim lots of partners is better than a big sponsor........

And they are- Ticketmaster, Hertz, Marriott, Lottery Funded, Specsavers, Get The Label, Centurion, Vivomed, Gullivers Sports Travel, Cymru Wales and Steeden.

But how many of them I wonder are, in kind (contra) deals? Ticketmaster, Hertz, Marriot, Gullivers Travel, Steeden, perhaps even Cymru Wales for PR we did that in the early years of commercial radio in the UK, until we realised how much we were missing out in real revenue.

Probably not, but they do have a list of paying sponsors and partners.
Gullivers Travel/Marriot/Hertz/Ticketmaster/Steeden/vivomed/woodenspoon/Centurion/Moss Bros are SUPPLIERS of Travel organising, Accommodation, Hire cars, Balls, energy supplements, tackle bags, suits for the england squad and a target charity.
Get the label are a Warrington based clothes retailer, so I doubt it's a massive deal and specsavers have a history of sponsoring referees and wont have spent much. The Welsh Tourist Board paid to host the opening ceremony....again, it will be minimal.

The RFL have just said the reason they are failing to deliver on commercials is because they are too busy buying bradfords iconic ground and getting Salford sold off....this is after they had preciously said that lots of small deals were better than one big one?

Let's hope IL and the other clubs manage to carry out the coup and the game can get back on a decent business footing......because like Foxy Bingo and Heinz big soup, the sponsors above in general pay NOTHING for the exposure they get.

I think the next step is for Super League Clubs while member of the RFL go their own way to controlling their own destiny, it has got to be run on similar lines at The Premiership in Football and Rugby Union.
