Leigh Centurions can confirm that Sam Hopkins will be rejoining the club on a month long loan deal from Wigan Warriors.
Sam, aged 24, originally joined the Centurions ahead the 2010 season. A highly rated young second row forward at the time, Sam came through the ranks at Leigh East and had represented the Great Britain Community Lions Under-18s as they toured Australia. Upon his return, he then became a regular for East’s first team.
After enjoying a steady first season with the club, Hopkins was rewarded for his efforts with a first team squad number for 2011 and made his Centurions debut against Hull Dockers in the Challenge Cup. He also began playing more regularly in the front row. It proved a good move for Hopkins as he pushed his way past a couple of players into the first team reckoning, and eventually got himself noticed by Super League Champions Wigan Warriors.
Sam scored 26 tries in 65 appearances for Leigh and though he signed for Wigan in a two-year deal in June 2013 he saw out the season with the Centurions, playing a big part in their Northern Rail Cup Final defeat of Sheffield Eagles at Halifax.
Speaking of Sam's return to Leigh, Head Coach Paul Rowley said: "We have a sickness bug in the camp at the moment, and have lost two more players due to tonsillitis, so it was a good time for the squad to receive a shot in the arm and a welcome boost."
"We still see Sam as our player, he knows what we are about, and he isn't getting much game-time at the moment, so we're keen to have him back in our ranks to provide extra cover and competition over another tough period."
Hopkins will be eligible to play for The Centurions this weekend in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup as Leigh face Rochdale Hornets at Spotland on Sunday (2pm).
Speaking about the news, Wigan Warriors Rugby Manager Kris Radlinski said:
“The one month loan provides Sam with an opportunity to get some important game time in a tough Championship competition. Sam has worked extremely hard since becoming a full time professional and is making huge strides with us but he needs to play regularly and this agreement with Leigh works well for all parties concerned. “

Great news that it is, Im still not sure I like this "On loan" stuff. We loan out to Barrow but then loan from Wiggin to replace/cover for them?
How many loanees can a team use,? could it end up that we play the likes of a Dewsbury team made up of half the Leeds team in a challenge cup tie etc.
What could happen in the promotion season, lowly teams loan from the SL in the play offs. I know it's extreme but a team made up with 5/6 SL players could end up knocking us out ( or even a Leigh side with 5/6 SL players deny the likes of Fax Fev etc the same chance) Though we don't need any loans for the last bit

Maximum of 5 players can be loaned/dual or a mixture but no more than 5, but Sam is a 'grunt' and Govs is of course a 'pivot' so hardly tit for tat one could say, and yes I know young Briscoe is also a 'grunt' as is Bullock.
But I personally agree with your thinking re if a club is loaning out players why should they loan in.

The play-off rules are different (unless of course the RFL have moved the goal post again???) it used to have been that a player has had have to played a certain number of games with the club to be eligible to play.

Some big tough forwards in our team

Must say i am a little confused with this news. I thought you signed a lan player usually when you require cover for injuries, or to strengthen a perceived weakness in your team, none if which imo fit with hopkins, firstly imo our pack is the best in the league, we have few injuries currently, and we have quality like, thornley, duffy, ostick, acton, bate cant get in. A simple question, why do we need him, especially at this stage of the year. On saying all the above i hope he destroys the hornets pack on sunday.

Seems like a win-win-win situation.
Wigan get to have Hopkins play in a system that they know he will be comfortable in and will get quality coaching and treatment.
Sam gets to be in a place that he knows, with people that he knows, and a team with a coach he respects and a purpose that he understands.
Leigh get a player that they know strengthens them at a key moment, for a cup game (or two) and more importantly for games with fax and fev in the league. Not forgetting Swinton of course.

So the above are better than Sam H.? We have some tough away matches coming up - that's why we need him.

Agreed, we had all those players listed last year (except Acton) and Hopkins was the best of the bunch.

I'm happy with it

Agreed we have many good forwards but he is a very very good forward. The problem for me is the 1 month. He's obviously not getting into the w!g@n 1st team, we could find a use from him if he could fit into our big squad. I honestly don't think1 month is anywhere near enough, if he came back on loan for the rest of the season he could really do some good work for us then go back to w!g@n really challenging for a 1st place spot. Not sure what 1 month gets anyone to be honest.

I'm sure the 1 month period will be at the request of Wigan in case they are in an injury crisis down the line after the minimum 28 day period). It does not mean it cannot be extended and I'm sure that is a strong possibility.
For now the month loan gets us Sam for 5 key games (including next round of the cup

, and since Swinton pushed Fev close on the weekend so will be tough)
For now I can't wait to see him back in a Leigh shirt, and I'm sure Rochdale would rather he not be this Sunday

As mentioned, due to full time training having Sam back fitter and stronger than when he left us can only be a good thing for Leigh RL. I have always rated this lad and watched him come through the ranks at Leigh East.

I love Sam he's a great player, was sad to see him go, it's a good move for him.
However we don't really need a prop , we have Acton Spencer Wilkes Emmitt bate Duffy and Ostick also Thornley can fill in there so why would we need Sam .

I know we want a first two finish, so are we saying that these players are nt good enough, if so why sign them ???
I worry this could cause upset in our tight knit group of players, we already have Bullock Briscoe and Govin out on loan too.
