| It was last year when we visited, beer was expensive at between £5 and £7 a pint. It was a fiver in the 'Melting Pot' Irish bar where the majority of visiting fans assemble. Wouldnt have missed the trip though, absolutely brilliant.

| I actually thought the ale was a bit cheaper this year than it was last year. Already got 300 Euros spending money because of the Limoux non-trip so I'm already sorted for Toulouse 2011!

| Depends on how desparate you are to get leathered.
My mate recommends the dirt cheap supermarket booze in your hotel before hitting the bars and spending round £5 a pint. If you are taking your wench then cheap wine in a French supermarket looks the same as expensive wine (it all has that funny foreign writing on) so you could get a couple of bottles at 2 euros each and she wont know the difference until its too late to either notice or care. Meanwhile you can get plenty of Stella or 1664 for tuppence a gallon.
He also says that the road leading from the station to the one where the Melting Pot is on has an Aldi, just incase you have real drink issues.
Unfortunatly I did not see any of this because I was in art galleries and museums for 3 days.
Food was cheap enough, but he says eating is cheating.

| There's an Aldi near the Toulouse ground which did me fine for provisions and drink during the course of my stay. From the stories I'd heard from fellow Leythers bar prices ranged from 5-7 euros a pint.
I was quite happy with the cheap stuff!

| When the Euro was stronger the equivalent cost was almost half so it wasn't too different to our prices.
So you can either blame; a/ Gordon 'Spendtrift' Brown for making our economy weaker than the lock on Brian Cloughs drinks cabinet or b/ Greedy American banks lending pots of money to folk with no shoes but a raving crack habit.
Thats one to discuss at 4am when you're dribbling on your shoes and wondering where that 150 Euros went.

There's also a Lidl and a decent supermarket on the walk down from the Ibis opposite the station to the Melting Pot, and the world's most surprisingly good takeaway

| It may be the Lidl that 'my mate' was thinking of.
Did it have lots of local drunks and dog all around it? About halfway down, not as far as the Spa and on the opposite side of it. First thing you come to in the store is bottled lager, then crisps, then breakfast cereal. All other non-essential items such as staple foodstuffs, water, soap etc were at the back.
Also, that takeaway wouldnt happen to be a chinese would it, far end of the road nearest the Melting pot with a huge seated area? If so then aye, it was bloody good!!

| furthermore the VAT in France is 19.6% (wait till ours is 20%) and there is a 15% inlcusive figure for service as generally the drinks are brought to you. Culturally the French do not drink in public as much as some of the more northern european countries such as ourselves, especially beer. They save save most of their supping for home hence the gallon of Stella and 1664 for tuppence at the supermarket. If you want to see real beer drinking in France visit the Alsace, 10 pints of stong lager before lunch is standard usually served in litre steins with a dash of Picon liquor (18%)

Yeah, that was the Lidl, frequent by the Toulousain equivalent of the Library Square mob
We did go in the Chinese but changed our minds after seeing some of the stuff, the one we went to was a couple of doors further down.

| Sanjunien last season to get a drink in the bar at the Toulouse ground you had to get tokens. Do they still have that system as I have about 7 left over from last season ?
Re the beer I am sure I got a pint of beer in the Melting pot for 4 euro 50 cents. Anyways I think the restaurants are very good value and also most of us were only in Toulouse for two days.
The bar in the Market Hall near the Melting pot is very good and friendly and I got a glass of red wine in there for 2 euros. You get get a sandwich or cooked meat from the surrounding stalls and eat that at the bar. Everyone was very friendly and one French lad bought me and 2 others a round of drinks.

I certainly hope so cos' i've still a load from last season - normally they will use the same system but will confirm it when we go down for the TO v Catalan friendly on the 29th
I've been either living or visiting france since the early 70s and beer has always been relatively expensive, probably cos' the wine was always considered as part of the staple diet of the french people - beer consumption has traditionally been miniscule compared to other countries like the uk.The supermarket beer is dirt cheap so it makes you wonder what the mark-up is when sold commercially ? even the wine is expensive in the restaurants (big mark-up again) but the cheapest option is to ask for a 'pichet' or jug of wine which will be the cheapest wine but not necessarily the worst wine.
Look forward to seeing you there, bon voyage

| About 7 Euros a pint on average. Friday night, all day Saturday and most of Sunday - so quite a bit of beer.
I bought tokens on the ground last year, the same number as my mates and spent the lot! Cant understand why one of them still has 7 left!!! Will have to watch him this year!
Also allow 30 euros for food.
Last pint I had last year was the best but cant remember what it was - was there a 1664 white beer? - very vague recollection only.

correct along with all the other (bieres blondes) largery type beers - they all taste pretty much the same to me though I prefer the Loburg if it's on tap - there's always your bog standard Stella of course. The 24 packs from the supermarkets are still great value if you can smuggle them into the ground....

Sent my passport for renewal this morning will let you have details when the new one arrives ok. I will phone you to save you the cost of the call.

Marsala is Italian. You could always drink it when you go over for the RFU Six nations
