| Sadly, my thoughts on "Mr" Thompson would get nowhere near the swear filter.
BIASED. Plain and simple.
Hull in the CC QF '83 at Wilderspool, anyone.
If that game was televised, we'd have gone through.
Cheating. End of.

In order of t##tishness, I'd go for
1. Thompson
2. John Smith
3. Lindop
4. Kershaw
5. Campbell
I regard the likes of Silverwood and Ganson as personal friends, compared to the 5 twunts listed above

| Wasn't that the game where he gave Bob Eccles offside after he kicked through and touched down? and Gerry Kershaw was definitely the least even handed of that lot

| I remember Billy Thompson he was the ref in the Floodlit Trophy Final replay at Wilderspool against Salford (we had drawn the first game 0-0) and John Bevan facing his own line dropped the ball 5 yards backwards and he gave a knock on. Salford scored from the scrum and won the game I think something like 10-5.
Lindop was coaching the Sheffield Uni side when I was there in the early 80s and one Warrington lad was known as the "wire b***ard" No bias there then

i was at that game it was phil ford who latched onto a ken kelly kick to the gymnasium corner it touched a hull player and ford picked it up and ran round to the sticks only for that pillock to dis-allow it..the try your on about was big bob took a pass from chizzy i think went round the full back only for the whistle to go and we got a penalty for a late tackle on chizzy..that day we had no hesford and had to rely on ronnie duane to kick the goals...blatent cheating at its best...didnt thompson go on the hull board or was that just a rumour

That's the first time the word honour has been used in the same sentence as Billy Thompson.
It just goes to show, as soon as Thompson finished "refereeing", Hull went back into their shell, and have only won a couple of things of note, since. You can't referee from the stands, you ####.
It might look that I don't like this "man". That would be incorrect.
I ####ing DESPISE him.
I hate cheats

| I think that game would have been the last time Wilderspool saw double k figures in attendance.
It was an all ticket sell out. You couldn't move that day. The fletcher end was like being in the stretford end.

| tbf, Russell Smith wasn't that bad a ref (imo)
Yes. he loved us over on 2/1/94, but we also lost other narrow games that season (it still stings with me though, as we'd finished 8th the season before, we signed JD, and I backed us @ 50/1 the week after he signed). Russell Smith WASN'T the reason we didn't win the league that year, as much as we'd like to blame him.
To all those under the age of 35 ish, who criticise Silverwood, Bentham, Thaler et al. Trust me, in the words of Harold McMillan "YOU'VE NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD"

| Surely the Connelly brothers should get an dishonourable mention as joint leaders of this gang. Also Billy Thomson had a habit of making scrums reform till he got his breath back. none of these refs would survive in the present game with TV replays

| Russell Smith was not bent. A very firm but good ref. probably the best since John Holdsworth.
Smith did make a mistake about Paul Cullen that effectively cost us the championship.
Smith realised he made an error and has since admitted so. You can't ask anymore than that, one huge blunder doesn't make him a bad ref.
Thompson however was different. I managed to get a question to him on GMR about the cc v hull. He gave no answer other than to mock Warrington fans.. He knew what he was doing the cheating b.
