Can anyone outline the rules regarding Trainers being on the field during play ?

At Sundays game against Hull, their Trainer was on the field for long periods, presumably coaching and advising.

At times he was in their line of defence and could have caused confusion even though he was wearing a yellow shirt.

He was completely ignored by the ref so presumably it was legal, but he must surely have been pushing the limits.

He appeared to spend more time on the field than some of their players, particularly the one who did 10 minutes in the bin.

Been annoyed about this myself for a long time,shouldnt be allowed imo.

At one point he was just behind their defensive line waving his arm in the air appealing for another set of six.

I don't get when people say the trainer fills a hole in the defensive line. You can see him because of his yellow shirt so surely the attacking team should just send people to run at him all the time? I bet he wouldn't have the balls to make a tackle if you ran at him and by standing there he's created a space in the line, when he scampers out of the way to avoid contact then there will be a space.

As far as I am aware they are only allowed on the pitch during period of attack from their team. They are given a grace to get of the pitch once a hand over occurs. I just think it noticed it more this weekend for him trying to get the tackles refreshed when one of the Warrington lads touch the ball (or not) in the pass

There's a difference between effectively coaching and coaching effectively. Which top teams did it? The worst culprits were teams at the lower end like Cas with Gary Mercer constantly on the field shouting orders and pointing and Cas got relegated

I remember getting particularly annoyed at Hull KR one year. There was this little curly haired bloke behind the defensive line, waving his hands about. Although he didn't make a tackle all day and had no impact on the game at all he was quite distracting. Ben Cockayne I think his name was.

This has never annoyed me as much as it seems to annoy others.

What about Fozzard's armguard, did that annoy you.

If he needs that much padding he shouldn't be playing the game!

Trainers/physios etc are allowed on the pitch at any time (in the interest of player welfare). Dont think the ref can actually do anything about it. What can be done is the club can be fined when the incidents are reported by the match commissioner.

The physio (orange jersey) is allowed on the pitch at any time to attend to injured players.

The trainer (yellow jersey) is allowed on the pitch when the team is in possession of the ball, to make an interchange. They must only stay on the pitch for a maximum of three play the balls. They cannot go on the pitch to only take messages on, but teams get around this by sending their physio with messages as they can go on at any time.

Some teams play by the rules and the trainer goes on when they are allowed, some teams send their trainer on whenever and leave it upto the officials to tell them not to go on.
