| Dont see how to be brutally honest...
Riley lacks the pace and attacking prowess of Penny... and has still come up with some handling errors that have lead directly to opposition tries.... Riley is simply a steady winger like the David Hodgsons of the world
Penny all day long for me.... he isnt going to get worse he is only going to get better...and its scandalous that its going to be at another club just because Jimmy lowes dropped him when he had no other ideas left in his empty head....
Like Ive said before We are willingly accepting Mathers Mistakes (approx 30 points for the opposition id wager) weve made calamity Matt King a super hero now after 7 decent games..... so its just a chapter of shame on the clubs and some fans part as regards to kevin Penny in my opinion.

| I've been pro-Kev since the day he scorched down the wing at Headingley, and I still am to this day. In fact, it still makes me sad that by the time I'd got to the clubshop all those bloody 'catch me if you can' t-shirts had gone. If I had one, I'd wear it in support at every match. As it is, I haven't seen one for years so come on all you t-shirt owners, ger'rum out, wear your Penny with pride.
Anyhow, back to him ... My only sort of negative about him is purely £££'s. I haven't a clue what he earns, not a clue. My mind says that he'll be on a decent screw as he signed a deal when he was the hottest property in RL, and since Offiah. So lets say for example he's on £45k a year. Now, I don't know what £45k gets you, but if it gets you a good standard SL player that Smith would like at Warrington then I think we have to lose him, ie, somebody that could just slot straight in immediately. If it gets you a sort of half decent, he could do a job player then I'd rather keep Penny as a sort of investment if you like, as his potential is massive, and that potential could be one day realised so it's worth persisting if that makes sense.

| We can all sit here starry eyed and recall pennys tries in a team that underachieved and won nothing.
The bottom line is Tony Smith has worked with him up close for over a year now and has deemed him not good enough for the first team... he has not been hounded out by the supporters... he has been moved out on loan by the coach because he doesn't appear to feature in his immediate plans.
People on here are going on about Mathers/ Rileys mistakes.... they mean absolutely nothing.. all players make mistakes. Riley is our leading try scorer and Mathers is easily the best fullback at the club... Some people seem to be of the opinion that 'riley makes as many mistakes as penny.. so he should play because he is faster'..... its not a 100m race is a game of rugby league.
The bottom line is Penny isn't deemed good enough for the first team squad.

I'm one of coopers biggest fans... but i had no arguments with him going out on loan.
With Morley, Carvell, the new Wood and Solomona.. there was no place for him in the first team squad... Carvells injury now means Cooper will be recalled.
If Riley broke his ankle do you think Penny would be re-called and put into the first team squad again?

| No I think He's finished at the club regardless of his performance.....I watched the Boy Williams when He got a start (ahead of Penny) he was visibly nervous visibly ordinary and quite clearly not ready for Superleague. so if Riley is ever out long term we can look forward to a centre playing on the wing and a second rower playing centre.
I did liked the bit about Penny being in a team that underachieved and won nothing.....
Where were you between 1992 and 2008.......?
because there's a long long long long list of players underachieving and winning ab-so-lute-ley nothing for you to thumb through.....

| Tony Smith is due to appear Paul Wood's fans forum on Thursday night. Kevin Penny might be an interesting point for discussion at that...

watching a team that underachieved and won nothing.... whats your point?
Is it that, according to my way of thinking, ALL players that played in teams from 1992 to 2008 are not good enough for the current team?

| Why all the assumptions that Penny is finished at the club other than for comments by Eddie/Stevo and Chariots O'flannel on Sky. Are Cooper, McCarthy, Blythe, Mitchell also finished?
Here's hoping its just to get him superleague fit and aware without the HJ booboys on his back.

| I dont think he is finished at the club.
I think he needs to improve a few aspects of his game until he can be in contention for a first team spot... After watching his lackluster displays for the under 20's (i imagine its hard to get motivated when you have come all the way down from SL hat-tricks and dream team selection), its obvious that's not how he is going to improve. Regular SL starts is the only way its going to happen.
The fact that he has moved away from his young baby and mrs shows his determination to make the most of this chance.... Hopefully a good spell at quins will see him come back an improved player, in contention for a first team place again.

| KP will get his chance next year I'd hope, when Spider heads back down under. The idea of Hicks staying on for another year is just paper talk, a leading question by the journo: "IF you were offered an extension, would you take it?" He's already stated he's heading home.
That'll be the making of KP in Wire colours. Until then I like to think TS is just grooming him, but with (what I'd imagine) a good salary under his belt it's not surprising he hasn't moved anywhere in a hurry.

i'd assume so he hasn't been cup-tied this season obviously unless there is a clause in his contract.

Having said that, aren;t there two cup deadlines nowadays?

well Why make that comment then ?.... it could be used when fans talk about Langer or Johns or Jonathan Davies or etc etc .........I just thought it unnecessary especially about a kid with a future in the game...
And if you want to get people really starry eyed just mention one season wonder Richard Henare.....

the point is that he is still a player at the club.. Langer, Johns and Davies are not.
He played in a team that underachieved and didn't win anything.... now we have a team, who you could argue, are not underachieving.... and the challenge cup in the cabinet.
There are players that were part of both the underachieving team and the trophy winning team.. Penny isn't one of them.

| Paul Wood didn't play in the final - does that make him an underachiever? How about Dave Solomona, how many domestic medals has he won - does that mean he's an underachiever? Lee Briers, 1 medal in 13 years - underachiever?
Your argument is based on the fact that you don't like Kevin Penny, fair enough, but you seem to struggle with coming up with facts to back up your opinion & persuade others to change their minds...

| Where did i say he is an underachiever? i said that he played in a team that underachieved, which he no longer appears to be a part of.
Paul Wood and Lee Briers were also part of that underachieving squad.. but they are also part of Tony Smith's first team squad.. THATS the point I am trying to make.
Where am i struggling to come up with facts? The only fact I have pointed out is that the coach his deemed him not good enough for the first team.
I'm not trying to change anyone's mind. Why do i need to?
For the record I like Penny.. i hope he comes back a better player, forces his way back into the first team and lives happily ever after... I just wish people would stop bleating on about how 'badly' he has been treated by the supporters.

| You seem convinced he is "quite clearly not" a better player than Chris Riley - how do you come to this judgement? Penny took his chance with spectacular style in 2007. Chris Riley has taken 4 years to become an overnight sensation. When Henry Fa'afili was here, he only scored so many tries (in many opinions) because he was playing outside Martin Gleeson - so is Riley only scoring so many because of his service? Is Penny only as good as the service that he receives? Yes - wind back 2 years when he was favourite to be top try scorer in SL & look at the mistakes he made; how many of them came when he was abandoned to defend 1 v 3 by his centre & 2nd row partners (Matt King & Louis Anderson). Who's to say he wouldn't be performing as well as Riley has this year with the change to defensive structure TS has brought?
I agree he needs to be playing regular SL to regain his confidence & the move to Quins will be good for him. I just hope he isn't another player we lose to another SL club permanently. He is more exciting a player than Chris Riley, Chris Hicks & Rhys Williams ever will be, and at the end of the day we are spectators in an entertainment business.

| Surely if Penny was 'finished' at Warrington, Mr Smith would have got rid of him by now or loaned him out for the season and not just for a month.
He didn't want Gleeson so he got rid.

| In that season teams pinpointed Pennys side of the pitch as a weakness they could exploit. I agree that a lot of it was down to King's woeful defending/positioning (and Anderson to an extent).. I think in this current side Penny would probably have scored all of riley's tries.. and probably a few extra ones as well... You wont find any argument from me that he is a more exciting player than all of the other wingers at the club.
i said he is quite clearly not a better player than Riley because of how far down the pecking order he now finds himself... maybe TS feels that the defensive structure wouldn't be the same with KP in the team.. who knows what his thinking is..
I watched Penny a number of times last season for the under 20's/18's/ reserves and to say his performances looked lackluster would be an understatement.... like i said though... must be hard dropping down to that level from hat-tricks and SL dream team selection... maybe it was these performances that influenced smiths decision... maybe it's how he trained... we will probably never know.

| Chris Riley is average on a good day. Bring Penny back! I'd pay an extra £10 to watch him. Id watch Quins on sky before the Wire now.
Warrington is full of idiots, well half full anyway
Let him just sign for Saints etc and have done with it.
Ps. He's not the most exciting winger at the club, he's the most exciting player. But Warrington have a defeatist mentality. The Man City of SL pre Arab owners.
