| Perhaps i didnt explain myself too well.
We all know how skilful Briers is. I just think that if Briers had really wanted to graft and be uber professional he could have moved on from warrington after a couple of years with us and probably won more medals and probably more caps.
I like your point about Mike Gregory but if you recall at the time there was one dominant team in the competition and they had one of the best players in the world playing 13. He could have gone to most oher club other than wigan and won fewer medals than he did with
us. So no i dont call that lack of ambition. I dont know all of the stats but how many times did we face wigan in finals of regal / John player trophies, challenge cup semi's and finals or premiership finals so we were competing during Gregs time here. How close were we to Bradford, Saints and even Leeds in the late 90's early 00's
I have not got a downer on Lee but i dont buy into the fact that all of the GB coaches and other sl coaches between 1999 and 2006 were wrong and Eddie Hemmings was right.

| Quote ="sally cinnamon"Well I don't think you can say Briers lacked ambition with his move. At the time Saints were Super League champions and had just won back to back Challenge Cups with Goulding and Martyn in the halves who were 25/26 at the time so potentially could have been first choice for the next 5 more years at least. Briers could have been looking at being an understudy till his mid 20s had he stayed. Briers wasn't to know that Goulding and Saints would have a serious fall out just after he left, and had he stayed, he would have probably got his shot.
As for why he stayed with Warrington, he probably never got an offer from a top club. It was well documented that Widnes were in for him but there were never any strong stories that one of the big clubs were chasing him. The year he was most likely to move, when he came off contract in 2002, was probably the worst year of his own form (and the clubs), and with just Widnes in for him he resigned with us. Wigan signing Tony Smith instead of Briers was obvious, Smith was a GB halfback and Briers was a teenager at the time, and he was still under contract with us when they signed Willie Peters and I doubt we would have been looking to sell at that time when we had just signed Langer. =#FF0000The bigger question for Wigan is why did they get rid of Long to sign those guys!
Also I don't know if you can just say that staying at Warrington is a negative and shows lack of ambition. Compare Mike Gregory and Billy McGinty. McGinty signed for a dominant Wigan team and picked up trophies and sailed into the GB side on the back of it. But does that mean that he had the courage to test himself where Mike Gregory wanted to stay in comfort zone...? Who was testing themselves more, Gregory or McGinty?'"
He was in big trouble off the pitch. He broke a young girls jaw outside Casinellis night club at Standish. At that point he was given a warning re his conduct. Lo and behold he got in trouble again in a pub in Wigan so it was decided to let him go.

Probably a fair point. I did think Briers was overrated a bit by fans and the media in the early part of his career, and the GB coaches and coaches of the top clubs didn't seem interested. Every time we played the Aussies and got beat there were calls for Briers to be brought in and because he wasn't involved with those games he was never tarnished by defeat so the idea started that if only Briers had played we would have had a chance against the Aussies. I don't know if he would have made a difference back then but I would have taken him as first choice in the 2006 Tri Nations down under and had GB been around since then I would have had him in the team. It's a shame for Briers that it didn't work out but then I suppose Warrington have been the full beneficiaries of his form and it's helped us win trophies.

If Saints had Briers in the past few years they would have won several more trophies. Meli and Gardner would be cashing in the tries from his kicks.

| It's a bloody good debate and a classic what if
Both great players in their own right, one in a great side for several years one in a predominately average side, both a bit flawed, both tempermental, both brilliant on their day and maybe should have played in the same GB side

Sean Long > Lee Briers
We haven't won the last 5 grand finals because we've not been the best team over the last 5 years. Having Lee Briers wouldn't have made any difference. We shouldn't have even made the final in most of those years, but certain other teams who perhaps should have kept fluffing their lines in the Play Offs.

last year apart you couldnt be more wrong. the two years before that we got excited by challenge cup wins and thus got dumped out of the knockout rounds of the play offs. your inability to see the talent in an opposition team player is laughable.
Would you have been as succesful if we had kept hold of Paul Sculthorpe and say you had had Paul Noone instead.....?? the Ricky Bibey Theory of relativity tells me you would...
ok then Leon Pryce a better stand off than Briers.....?

| The year we fluffed the playoffs was when we got hammered by Huddersfield in 2010.
Anybody that thinks we were Grand Final contenders before 2010 (we probably should have got one more round in 2005 when we had Andrew Johns, but we would have had Bradford at Odsal and they would have beaten us).
Briers would have made a difference in those big games in a good side because he has always had the ability to make a team finish off plays. Even when we were inconsistent under Van de Velde and Cullen it was our defence that let us down, the scoreboard was always ticking forwards for us because we used to score points.
