That's what I thought when I read the article in The Guardian. I strongly suspect that Gelling will be given his marching orders - if anyone can find him.

He's only committed to a one year deal and both parties here will know there's a risk.

He had a lot of injury problems in his last couple of years and he's played the game for a long time and taken a lot of hits because of his playing style.

He's also been through a difficult patch with his mental health - you never know how coming to a new country and unfamiliar environment will work out.

I think we should factor in some risks from the start. He might come over with the best of intentions but his body breaks down or he might find that the move isn't good for him and his state of mind and we may need to let him go before the season is up. Or he might resurrect his career, be a superstar and NRL clubs will want to sign him for 2022.

I am seeing this as a bonus that we didn't expect, I'm not expecting more than a year and I wouldn't hold it against him if it doesn't work out. Whether or not we win a trophy, I hope he is free from injury and able to show what he can do on the field and enjoy his year with us, have a good relationship with the fans and go back feeling like this was a happy time in his life when he felt good about himself and his rugby, and be a lifelong Wire fan.

The one risk that I don't think he brings is of being a player who will draw a salary while being a passenger in the team - if his body or mind aren't right he's more likely to quit. He walked away from a huge contract in Souths when he retired. Some players have that level of personal pride that they won't turn out if they can't live up to their standards hence you get surprise early retirements, like Cantona at United or Allan Langer when he quit Brisbane mid season then reconsidered and came back to sign for us. Inglis is hopefully in the same position that Langer was.

As an aside, one of the most intriguing Wire rumours I heard, which was never confirmed but I got it from a well connected source, was that back in the Cullen era when we had that off season when Nat Wood was supposed to be signing for Wigan, we were trying to get Brad Fittler to reconsider his retirement and join Wire. In the end, Fittler said he didn't think he would be the player he used to be and didn't want to accept a big contract if he couldn't live up to it.

The "buying a title" argument is an interesting one in a salary capped sport.

By that logic aren't the previous SL titles won by Saints and others also "bought" given they were operating at the full cap?

I get that we don't produce the number of SL standard academy players that those teams do, but our title would still be no more "bought" than theirs if they are operating at the full cap.

Anyway it's a moot point as like Sally I don't think we have the quality across the park to win it even with Inglis.

Greg Inglis is 33....i dont think he would be trying to come back if he was really 'injured retired'.

he obviously thinks he can perform at this level.... or he wouldn't be doing it.... a 1 year contract as well.

A few years ago, every single fan in the league would have given half a sack, for a 33 year old Inglis.

This should be applauded to the rafters..... This could easily be the greatest player SL has ever seen.... making a signing like this, in the current climate, with all the uncertainty... what a statement.

Reading in between the lines...it says to me that Jace Clark has a one season extension he asked about and his best pal wants to spend sometime over here with him and all expenses paid.
I’ve no issue what has driven it so long as he’s good.

to be fair, most of us joked about how clark would fare after it was announced bryson was going home, no one expected him to get himself a new mate in this fashion.
