I started watching in 1989 and only really got one season before injuries started taking their toll on him. I think I missed the best days of Gregory's career.

| I disliked Fozzard immensely...even when he played for us, due to that ridiculous arm guard and the fact that his action was always bordering on illegal IMO. He always, always led with elbow/robot arm and without that would've been completely ineffective.

| No short termers (old Aussie off season Blake, Davidson, Roach etc) in mine
Against my better judgement, I've also picked a pooh house (but he was rather good, I wonder if you can spot him [size=50wink[/size)

3. Gleeson

I've even got my old bugbear of goalkickers covered, by not having 1 awesome one, but 2.
(Briers as another backup, and at a push, Westwood)
Profuse apologies for no John Bevan, my first sporting hero. But you can't leave out a scoring record like Monoghan's, and Drummond was a God

| I like the selection of Solomona there lefty, I considered it myself. Thought he didn't merit inclusion on the grounds of overall contribution, compared to guys like Burns or Harrison, but if you pick a team loaded with stars, Solomona would cause carnage.
As for the pooh house, presumably Gleeson, he's down the list for me. He was good, and had an excellent first season, but if you take his other three and a half seasons I thought he was in second gear for us. Sometimes good, but a contributor to the general later Cullen era malaise that when the chips were down, some senior players didn't do enough to turn things around, they just let things drift. I got the impression with Gleeson, that he felt he was better than us, and he should have been still playing in that dominant Saints team with his old mates but was with us as a punishment for getting involved in the betting saga. He just seemed aloof and disengaged. You never got that feeling with Bateman, who would have also been justified in thinking he could have done better than some of the Wire teams he played in.
Also even if you just take contribution on the field, I don't think its clear cut that Gleeson was ahead of say Bridge, King, Kohe-Love, Atkins. Gleeson had a more reliable 'floor' to his standards and had a wider skill set than those guys, although he wasn't as quick. Those guys had longer spells with us and had times when injury or lack of form affected them but they didn't coast in second gear like Gleeson did. If you took the peak 4 year spell from any of those guys and compared it against Gleeson's spell I would take them.

| I watched the Warrington side predominantly from the late 40's to the end of the 50's and a couple of players not mentioned to date would certainly be in contention for the 17. One of my favourite scrum halves Gerry Helme and a goal kicking, ball playing second rower Harry Bath.

Is the correct answer. Well done DSM.
For me, Gleeson was a good guy. No poohhousedness from me.
Smith gave an ultimatum to all our players when he came. If you want out, off you go (I heard a few stories about his behaviour at the time. A good move for all concerned)
He went. We got (iirc) £150,000 + Mathers
Mathers got a CC winners medal
Gleeson got a GF winners medal. Everyone's happy.
(Some) Wire fans showed themselves up, when he went to Hull, a year or so later. They booed him, mercilessly, at the HJ, yet Carvell wasn't by the Hull fans. Rather embarrassing.
Gregory A engineered his move away, and even went on strike, despite a 2@ing off Boyd (if the stories are to be believed)

I put Solamona in, for sheer entertainment value. As good a ball handling forward I've seen in the P&B. There's enough "grunt" and workload in my team to afford what can be classed as luxury.
I do take your point about Gleeson. I too think his heart was never really here, BUT, he was absolute quality. You could tell from the players around him, that he was a cut above them.
On another day, I'd swap him for Bateman's bench spot, but hey-ho.

Your obviously a good judge Captain ha ha (I never spotted it) but that team and to be fair quite a few other line ups on here would be worth the admission money and wouldn't lose many although if the same criteria was used by other clubs then their teams might take some stopping??
I did consider putting Parry Gordon at 7 but thought it's not a popularity contest so stuck with Gregory A and I also had a thought for having Solomona on the bench al a Monsieur Goldblatt

Big call here, but Gregory's departure to Wigan, for me, was the difference between Wigan, and not us, becoming the power of the late 80's, early 90's.
Gregory was the final piece in the Wigan jigsaw. We had more or less completed our jigsaw until Gregory smashed it to pieces.
That Wire side of November/December 1986 was the best RL club side I've ever seen. The 13 try demolition of Leeds at Headingley was the most complete RL performance I have ever witnessed (well, apart from Paul Bishop's lousy kicking!).
Gregory's departure left arguably the biggest what if in our history. The sight of him running the game behind THAT pack was probably perfect RL.

Good shout I collared Gregory at a Sportsman's Dinner not that long after he'd hung up his boots and said as much. He said that his departure wasn't as simple as we all thought....yeah yadder yadder yadder

Again, hard to disagree with a word of that, DSM
THAT game was one of the few (localish) away games I missed, that year. I remember the Radio Leeds commentator (obviously a Yarkshiremon) describing it as the "finest British team performance in any sport, that I've ever seen".
Luckily, I have seen the full game on video, and one word sums it up....pornography. We'd've given the touring Australians a game, that day (they were touring at the time, AMAZINGLY, we didn't get a game, despite us winning the Prem, a few months before)
That Gregory (A) partnership with Roberts was a joy to behold. Great days
