In today's broadcast on BBC London, the state of the game in the South was discussed widely. There was a debate started by Phil Caplan of 40/20 that the game needs to sharpen up dramatically in the way it presents itself to the wider sporting public, particularly in London. Perhaps even create a new brand name as "rugby league" arguably carries too much baggage. Importantly this needs the right people to deliver it, and Phil's view is the very least we need is a dynamic energetic spokesman to deliver the message on behalf of RFL or a marketing body that may be created.Who should this be? Ought it to be someone from London? Let's not talk heartlands or development area, let's find someone with the capability of producing a national identity. Could a recent player be the answer? A version of Sky's Brian Carney? Or Jon Wells? What about a role for Jon Wilkin perhaps? Your thoughts please and I can relay them back to Phil as it was his suggestion.

Wilkin is the most divisive person in RL you need someone who understands the real world not a bitty shop or a recognisable personality

Bradley Wiggins, Russell Crowe or Clair Baldwin would be great at delivering the message

I think the answer is me.

We need a combination of people in my opinion. Ex players, who have the respect of the current and past fans (Paul Sculthorpe?) A recognisable legend of the game (Ellery Hanley?) A young, enthusiastic, current player, who is comfortable on camera and not a jug eared stereotypical flat capper (Josh Charnley/Richie Myler/Zak Hardaker?) And a star turn that you wouldn't associate with RL. Wiggins, Giggs, Crowe, Swann, Rooney, Ferdinand all fit the bill, and all watch RL and have done bits of publicity for us before, but needs to be larger scale.

Martin Offiah has a regular RL column in the Evening Standard - would seem like a good choice to me...

Sinfield would be the perfect one.

A spotless image on and off the field. Highly intelligent lad, great role model for any kids, and a well known name in the game due to his incredible success.

Shaun Edwards fits the bill as he is known and respected, Offiah comes across badly imo
The problem with sky virtual exclusivity is that we don't have household names anymore

It needs to be somebody who is:

Articulate in speech and body language
Great knowledge of all the game
Doesn't have broad Lancs/Yorks accent that is hard to listen to
Good looking
Loves the camera

Sam Tomkins was really growing into this role especially now he has packed in the infantile stuff we used to see during his early years. Hopefully he will continue to develop down under then come back and become the face of rugby league.
