| Looked good to me.
The officials (and commentators) seemed obsessed by whether it struck the ground before he kicked it.
Clearly it did, so that makes it a drop kick ("a kick whereby the ball is dropped from the hands (or hand) and is kicked immediately it rebounds from the ground"icon_wink.gif rather than a punt, but still legal within the laws of the game.
But then again I imagine dozens of forward passes per game that the officials don't call, so maybe it's my eyes.

| That wasn't a drop kick, he lost control by of the ball by dropping it and kicked it after it had hit the ground

kicking it after it hit the ground is part of the definition of a drop kick.
nor did he lose control of the ball - he deliberately dropped it with the intention of kicking it.

He didnt deliverately drop it at all.. stop talking out of your backside - any player who does this only when he is going for the drop out/goal.

| Of course it wasn't a drop goal attempt he went to kick it and it hit the ground first so it is a knock on. You see the same thing happen when someone loses the ball but kicks it before it hits the ground then it is play on.

If Danny had kicked it before it had the ground, it would have been rightly play on.. but he didnt.
End of chat.

| Even McGuire and the rest of the Leeds players knew it wasn't a try - they all sprinted back towards the Wigan 10m line after they saw it on the big screen.

Of course he deliberately dropped it. You might argue that the attentions of the tackler disrupted his timing and turned an intended grubbered punt into a grubbered drop kick but it was still a legal kick and anyway who are the officials to try to read the mind of the player as to what sort of kick he planned? Especially when benefit of the doubt to the attacker is supposed to be applied.
And for the record I've seen plenty of players over the years use little drop kicks as attacking tactics close to the goal line.

This could then be when a player drops it, let it bounce for a split second and then kick it...
PLAYYYYYYYYYY ON
Didnt know you guys in Yorkshire made up new rules.. you better ask Clarkey first if the rugby gods will allow them though.

So you don't agree that he let go of the ball intending to kick it?

Cannot tell if it was for that or if Sam had forced an error - However the ball then hit the floor and its classed as a knock on unfortunately.

Are all Wigan fans on first name terms with the players?

Having 3 brothers in the first team squad makes it easier to call them by their first name than their second.
Anything else?

| No try for me. Clearly hit the ground then kicked it. I was under the impression that a drop goal is when the player kicks the ball the same time as the ball hits the ground otherwise couldn't you let the ball have one bounce and then hit it?
I still remember in 1997 away to London broncos James lowes was denied what could have been the match winning try because the ball hit the floor just before he kicked it.
Also if you lose control of the ball and kick it before it hits the floor i'm pretty sure it's still technically a knock on. i remember getting pulled on this a few years ago but can't fully recall.

| lets be honest...wigan got all the decisions tonight......
they didnt play well and they were helped by quite a few decisions from the officials.
i watched the game with a neutral view tonight..... wigan got away with some very dubious decisions.
it was a shame really.... it was a great game of rugby.... hand on heart i thought leeds did enough to win.... some very debatable calls for a few wigan tries.
thats rugby league though.

| I am not a neutral , but ..
Let's say that Sam was attempting a grubber kick , and just after he dropped the ball (with the intention of kicking it) Danny tackled himfrom behind WHEN HE DIDN't HAVE HOLD OF THE BALL . Is that a foul by Danny for tackling him when he didn't have the ball ? is it a penalty try ? He clearly (as it turned out) would have scored despite the foul .
Thoughts ..

| Rovers scored a try from a drop/grubber kick against Leeds in our first super league season. It went to the video ref that day and was given as a try. Everyone in the commentary box seemed fine with the decision and there seemed to be no controversy about it. Just shows the inconsistency again in the decisions.

I thought there were quite a few decisions that would have rattled each team. Alibert had a bit of a stinker, but then I fully expected that having not jumped on the "Alibert is the greatest ref ever to have lived" bandwagon that seemed spring up this season. Apart from his fitness he's got nowt. And if it weren't for the touch judge advising him (touch judge doing his job eh?) he would have awarded a try to McGuire and we'd be saying Wigan were robbed by bad reffing.
I agree with you about Leeds, and said to the missus in the final minutes that they'd done enough to win; then again, by the same token, with a scoreline like that Wigan obviously did enough to not lose. Neither side dominated the other enough to claim a clear victory.

That's the RL game and how it is.
And the next one.

| The more worrying thing for me is that the Wigan player interviewed thoiught it was a try in real time, the ref wasn't sure but the linesman saw something in a micro second to go to the VR, but failed to see the most obvious forward pass right in front of him. Selective sight maybe.

Keep the one who saw the McGuire incident and sack the other one then. It looked like the pillock we have tomorrow as referee.
