| Few reasons...
1. Melbourne factor. Nothing else to do.
2. AFL better live than on TV according to its followers.
3. Membership has never been pushed in NRL, in AFL it has been for 50 years. That is changing with NRL club memberships soaring in recent years.
4. The MCG...which is a natural draw for all sport in Melbourne and helps them achieve the average they have with big matches between Melbourne clubs in the centre of the city. Wonderful sports precinct. We never got our St Peters unfortunately...
Traditionally been a higher attendance for AFL over NRL.
We on the other hand win on other formats: TV, internet and radio.
Evens out.
The article is clear - the top three sports in this country have always been cricket, rugby league and AFL (in no particular order), but with a recognition that cricket was the overall national sport. Much like in England although soccer dominates via attendances.
This is changing. Rugby league and AFL are clearly the bigger sports now. Even on attendance which is the NRL's weakest link in terms of these measuring methods (of which there are numerous).

Thanks for that Old Darlin'
Not sure I agree with all of that necessarily. I mean Melbourne has so much more to offer in the word of the arts and entertainment.
What do you make of this paragraph?
[i"Other figures show Channel Nine's viewing audience has fallen by 24 per cent in the past 10 years, caused largely, the document reveals, by AFL's tightening ''stranglehold on TV'' through its access to two free-to-air networks and a much larger advertising budget."[/i
Do they get more viewers on free to air than RL? I know me and Dally just wind each other up, but I did think RL had more TV viewers. Or is that just on on-free to air or summink?

poor trolling mick,
when you pay to go to RL games you get the right to bag our attendances.

| Because NRL's biggest market is in Sydney where they are all slack, lazy are5ed couch poatatoes who are allergic to rain with clubs that have been fattened off the teat of the misery of pokie machine funding for so long that they don;t give a 5hit if fans turn up to watch them or not. In a nutshell!

If you could have argued with it, you would have.
You might have noticed the in my post too...
As for TV figures, are you going to try and re-argue it again? Based on what, an article on cricket in the SMH?
That stuff about 1988 and a small amount of knowledge obviously cut you deeply...

Because more people in Australia like AFL than NRL.
AFL is after all, the nations number 1 sport.
