If you read Smith's comments he said that it wasn't a match squad, it was a group of players he wants to work with and he wants to get to know each other. You can guess from that it'll form the backbone to future England match squads.
Obviously there are no wingers in there and Smith mentioned the above named players are not guaranteed a place in the actual match squads. |

Take 4 to the world cup out of a 23man squad and then name 6 in a 17 man elite squad |

Hmm, you do have to wonder what some players have done to never get a mention.
Lets see what the full squad looks like, besides, the playing team will the same old faces and same old results anyway, so its a moot point.
