I imagine they will want to be in the country at least seven days before the competition starts.

Er, possibly because the team isn't Italian and has been cobbled together from NRL players who had an Italian ancestor sailing with the first fleet, just to make up the numbers?

The article says that.
The quote just says "We have reached 40 per cent sales for the overall tournament"

Excellent news. Particularly regarding the smaller venues. I though ticket sales for these would be slow until the end of the season. Great stuff!

I'd like to know the actual percentage of tickets that have been made available so far. If that figure is also... say... 40%... then reaching 40% of sales for the 40% available ticket allocation = 16% in real terms.

There's no evidence provided in that article on actual ticket sales at the smaller venues. In fact, there's no evidence provided on actual ticket sales at all. There's a lot of hot air in that article though.

| I don't really mind what the attendances up to the SEmi Finals are, it will only be remembered for the last few games, if we can get those sold out or near as damn it, then it will be a success for me, I think 44,000 saw the last final at Old Trafford, I think anything less than 60K for the final, whoever is in it will forever be remembered as a failure in ticket sales (not the tournament.)

It makes sense to make comparisons to recent RL world cups (figures below) to judge ticket sales success/failure. The news article is positive and sounds like these figures will be easily beaten.
2000 world cup in UK
Opener 33,758
Semi 16,032 and 8,114
Final 44,329
2008 in Aus
Opener 34,157
Semi 26,659 and 15,855
Final 50,599

Edit.
589,436 seats/spaces really available over all venues over all games according to the published venue capacities. Depending on their own definition of "available" this release can actually be taken either way.
If they had topped the attendance figure from the 2000 RLWC they would have announced it......if they had cracked 200,000 they would have announced it.....all this release has done is cast doubt on the actual number of seats available at the comp in an attempt to create a rush for tickets based on a perception of demand....I doubt it will work!
If they had sold out any of the England Group games, they would have announced it. I suspect that the only 2 games with a chance of selling out at the group stage are the 2 being played in France.
As usual, English RL fans will wait and see before trying to book a QF ticket and then moaning about lack of availability/Price.
As I say, I will be more than happy to eat my words, but to date, very little in the way of positive news is coming from the organisers.

I get what you're saying, but over 40000 final tickets have been sold alone, that's 14% of the whole tournament tickets just at one game.

Why is 200k a landmark? It seems a weird one considering that its only about 75K less than 50% which is surely a more obvious landmark.
Also why is the 2000 WC, widely derided as terribly attended a landmark? Im not sure what the publicity gain is from a statement basically saying “ we are slightly better than appalling”
Also ‘available tickets’ quite obviously means tickets which are available for sale. You can buy tickets anywhere in the grounds for group games, they don’t seem to be opening stands as and when, and the percentage would be a hell of a lot higher if they were only including the tiers/stands currently for the big games because there could only be a high percentage of tickets sold for stands open (even if we had only sold 20k tickets for the final, if that’s 20k of 25k seater stand that’s 80%)

200k would be a statement of success with 100 days to go.....as it is, all we've had is cryptic spin with no substance at all.
Quote ="SmokeyTA"Also why is the 2000 WC, widely derided as terribly attended a landmark? Im not sure what the publicity gain is from a statement basically saying “ we are slightly better than appalling”'"
With 100 days to go, an announcement on surpassing the previous RLWC held in the UK would a statement of success. All we've had to date is spin....given the penchant for RL fans to think the worse, I suspect ticket sales will not increase as a result of said spin!
Quote ="SmokeyTA"Also ‘available tickets’ quite obviously means tickets which are available for sale. If you don't expect to fill it then don't play there! Cardiff and Wembley are massive mistakes IMHO......especially Wembley. I would have made it impossible to even be in with a chance of a ticket to the Final if you didn't have a ticket to the Semi-finals....Elland Road (37k) and the City of Manchester (47k).....60% of tickets to the final only available to people who have tickets to the semi's.....after a deadline, unsold seats released to ticket holders from the Quarters.
As it is, of the 80,000 regular SL and Championship fans, who attend games week in week out, a hard core 30% have bought maybe 4 or 5 tickets each so far.
As for the group games featuring less sellable teams, there's where you should of had your double headers.
As it is, the BBC will broadcast the opening ceremony with the top tier of Cardiff empty......the semis with 1/3 of the stadium empty and to any occasional viewer of sports who sees this, it will appear like nobody cares.
Marketing 101.....Create a product then create a demand for that product by making it hard to get......other than the RLWC Final, I suspect anyone will be able to pay at the gate/on the day for the other games.

| I think there are still huge portions of the to public yet to buy. I suspect the rush will occur after the cc and then again after the cf. If the NFL are not pushing tickets at these two games. Then sack the marketers.

I don't. The Venues were named and the times announced......that's when an event will shift the majority of its tickets. Whether it's a sporting event, or a concert, the initial demand points to the overall attendance in the long term.

The CC and the GF sees the up to half of the crowd as neutrals....with maybe even more at Wembley......if the RFL are hanging their hat on your "rush for tickets" after these two finals, then we really are in trouble.
I fully expect to see RLWC 2013 Tickets being offered FREE as incentives to buy 2014 Season Tickets/Passes before the end of September this year.....

Just reading the post i do sometimes get the feeling you hope it will fail. We need to stop comparing it events we can't compete with yet.
We need to bulild year on year making it bigger and better. If we get more ticket sales and a higher profit than the last WC then that is a success.
I'm sure even if we sell all tickets available the some fans will still moan that not all the stands were open for Cook Islands V USA.
Didn't the all conquering 2012 Olympics draft in the army to fill the empty seats last year?

Yes but that wasn't due to lack of demand; it was due to lack of supply. The seats filled by the army were set aside for the international press and other representatives who did not take them up. They were withheld from the paying public who generally expressed their displeasure at being denied tickets when there were so many available seats.
I think we can all be 100% certain that if RL is holding back ticket availability it isn't to facilitate international media and other representatives. I would imagine it is because those tasked with issuing tickets are trying to ensure certain areas in stadia look full before releasing further tickets.
I think if 40% of tickets have been sold so far then that is disappointing. I would have expected at this stae of the year for around 60% to have been sold.
I have yet to buy mine so that is half a dozen more tickets yet to be purchased at various locations!

40 % is far from disappointing if you compare with recent World Cup sales at the same stage in 2008, 2000, and 1995!!!

I don't think I know anyone who has bought a ticket yet. I do however know plenty of people, myself included who will be starting to buy tickets for the big games soon and group games closer to the time. Surely a good sign? Big events like the 6 Nations sell out in a flash because for a great majority of people it is the one live game they attend a year.
This year I have clocked up 21 rounds of SL plus a few Championship games, R4/5/QF of the cup and three pre season games so there isn't the same sense of urgency etc that I might have if I hadn't been to a game all year, nor do I have the money to start buying tickets way in advance. Plenty of people in the same boat!
