| Quote ="The Chronicler of Chiswic"Total and unadulterated drivel. At the outbreak of WW1 the Football League consisted of 44 clubs of which all bar seven were in the Midlands and the North and out of those seven six were in London (the other club was Bristol City). In order to expand the game in the South the FL took over the Southern League's top division lock stock and barrel in season 1920/21.'"
in the times i mentioned "rugby" was the dominant sport of the north by a long way but it lost its hold largely because of the FA cup and the RFU

| Dally - possibly your most inaccurate statement on here, ever.
First Southern club to win football league was Arsenal in 1931, 40+ years after the start of the league. After the formation of the football league in 1882, the only Southern team to win the FA Cup in the next 40 years was (non-league) Spurs.
Rugby was the dominant sport in Yorkshire for a while, it was certainly never the dominant sport in the wider North of England.

| I've often thought it makes business sense for Huge Union clubs such as Leicester and Gloucester to seek to utilise their facilities all year. Either would get 5k watching a league franchise I'm sure in much the same way as Leeds Carnegie, plonked in a town that frankly doesn't give much of a damn, still musters 5k to turn up.

What would that achieve though? 5k is nowhere near good enough for Super League, any youngsters would be signed to the Union club and League would always be the poor relation. It would be a pointless waste of time that would devalue Super League.

| Not if they want to break even it isn't. 8,000 should be a min for a club looking to have a 3million pound income which would allow them to spend full cap and invest in youth, marketing etc that is needed for any new club.

| The real "acceptable" figure could be less than 5000 or it could be more than 8000 it will be whatever is needed to keep the backers involved and supporting the club.
Whatever that figure may be, the potential synergies to be gained in a collaboration with an existing club mean it will be less for a joint venture than for a stand alone club.

| I'd go for expansion in somewhere like the Coventry area, there's a fair bit of League played round there and you'd have a central team not too far from any of the current clubs with the exception on Catalans

Am I right in thinking as well that Cov RU went under? So no threat from Kick and Clap.

dally this is nonsense. Look back at which teams founded the football league; 6 of them were from Lancashire and the other six were from the Midlands. No club from further south than Aston Villa (Birmingham) took part or would take part for a very long time. Preston won the first two leagues IIRC and Everton won the next two.
Soccer may have been weak in West and East Yorkshire but it was very strong in the rest of the north, particularly Lancashire, South Yorkshire and the North East.

| Quote ="dally messenger"so unless something is 100% exactly the same as before, its not relevant huh?
i think whats happened in the past is very relevant
i also think whats happening at wrexham is also relevant
there are many clubs in other codes which are lagging in areas which the sport of RL wants to get too
as the game grows i expect these clubs to want a SL license
rather than setting up new clubs, this is a much easier option'"
It's not even 10% relevant.
Holbeck folded and Leeds City took over the lease on Elland Road.
Leeds City were booted out of the league and 5 years' later Leeds United were formed.
There is no connection between Holbeck Imps and Leeds United other than they both played at Elland Road.

| Really? In what way – can you be specific about the similarities? And, while you're at it, actually name the most boring topic ever?
(actually, for a nonsense thread started with a nonsense post, I'm constantly amazed it attracts as many replies as it does)

| The person that said South Yorkshire. That would take some time and a lot of resources, as there is the odd interest there, but very little understand the sport in any detail.
Midlands have a history of rugby league. For example, lets say Coventry. They used to be quite "up" on there rugby league.
Yep, I've got it, lets expand in Coventry and then Nottingham.
Then again, when I say have a history.............I am talking over 100 years ago.
