Out of the players that are out of contract i would keep wellens on a two year deal, release meli, keep flannary on a one year contract, keep bryn on a two year contract and keep clough on a long term contract (4-5 years)

| To be honest, the players out of contract at the end of 2010 ain't great players. If I could replace them I'd only offer clough a new deal but if the is nothing out there to replace them with then I'd only offer one year deals.
Flannery - he's played well this year and become a senoir member of the squad, he's a grafter but don't offer enough threat with the ball. I'd offer him a one year deal.
Meli - To be honest meli plays well nearly every year. He's one of a few in our squad that can bust a tackle. He's terrible defending any type of kick and can lose us games with his brain farts. He's showed up pretty well in the centre but worry teams will target him. I'd offer him one year deal.
Clough - I like clough. He's tough, never takes a back step, hard worker and has great leg drive. IMO he's not big enough for a prop and not mobile enough for a backrow but makes up for all that with heart. He don't offer much with the ball( like all our backrows). He is a great team player and I'd offer him a 3yr deal.
Bryn - He ain't a great player, he's to small, can't bust a tackle, don't see him put any big hits in but he's never ever let saints down! He's steady and just gets on with his job. For some reason I seem to like bryn. If the is nothing out there to replace bryn with then I'd give him a 1yr deal.
Wello - Its a hard call with wello, he's been one of the outstanding players in super league for many years. He is safe as houses at the back and would die for saints. We all know his pace is a problem but I feel he's to important to the team to not offer him a deal. His support play over the last month has been outstanding! I'd offer a 1yr deal with the option of another year.
If we could replace any of the above with better players then I would but if nothing out there then it's better to keep them and depend even more on our young lads.

| I`d keep Flannery over meli if we are looking at someone to play centre.
But meli can cover wing very effectively.
I wouldn't keep both.
Hargreaves would have to come very cheap and i think will get a deal purely on the basis that we are losing a couple of props.
Clough is a keeper.

Wello is the tricky one for me and I can't disagree with that assessment.

No doubt about his talent and commitment, but please don't make the same mistake as with Cunningham, and the club and supporters have to share the blame, that is become a liability, especially to younger players, we have had it if Wellens is not on the pitch!

Cunningham has not become a liability at all! He still does a great job and we miss him when he's off the pitch.
I would only offer wello a 1yr deal witha view to a extra year if he plays well in 2011.
The end of next year will be huge for saints. Kyle eastmond, leon pryce, james graham and tony p are all off contract.
Kyle and graham will require big deals to keep them at saints, i just hope a pay rise and the lure of playing at the new saints stadium will keep them at saints.

I don't think it's a hard call where Wello is concerned at all, for just the reasons you state. We need his experience and skill while we bring in young players and his positional ability more than compensates for his lack of pace for most of every match. Renewing Wello's contract is a no brainer for mine.

As i said, i WOULD offer wello a new deal as he IMO is still very very important to saints.
I think wello is close to the end of playing at the top level, so i would only offer him a 1yr deal with the view of another year depending on how he goes next year.

Yes. And I was agreeing with you. So what are you getting your knickers in a twist for?
All the rest I'm not sure on although I'd probably sign Clough for a couple more years as he's a major grafter in our squad, and a good grafter too.

He is a squad player but because maurie has been out all year he's become a regular starter.
He never let's us down and IMO is a good player to have at the club.

Well, take Meli. He's played out of his skin this season but it's contract time so I'm not entirely sure I trust he will play out of his skin next season if we re-sign him. But even when he's playing out of his skin and tucked away at centre - a position that suits him IMO - he's still a bit of a liability both in attack and defence. I suppose I would keep him on if we had no-one else to fill his spot (and a backup as well given our recent injury history).
Flannery - again, he has done well for us and I think works very hard. But have we not got young guys who could do as good a job for us next season and who might enable us to get another bruising prop from foreign lands to ease the burden on Jammer further? I'm not sure we actually need Flannery next season, except he can cover at centre if we are once again crippled by injuries.
Bryn - well, he made a super fine pass at Wrexham to set up a try so he is well capable of playing some good rugby. I suppose I would keep him on reflection as we need to have a few good squad players who can bolster the team when needed.
I think we just have to be careful not to close the door on our young guys. Where will Emmitt be, for instance? Or Dixon, Ashurst and Magennis? We need to grow these guys surely?

I agree pretty much with all of that, its bloody frustrating that its always when its contract time that players suddenly wake up, I remember Meli doing it last time his was due and Flannery this year has at times looked the prospect we'd signed in 2007 both are clearly talented enough when they have their game head on.
The only way around it is with 1 year deals to keep players on their toes but all that will mean is if the get offers they will go to somewhere that will give them 2/3 years, if they play as they have for the majority of this season and they are worth new deals but I guess its always the chance you take as to next years form.
We do need to nurture the youngsters but if we are losing Maurie, Fozzard, Gidley, Cunningham and signing Shenton, Perry, Soliola (like a new signing) and maybe LMS then they should hopefully still get plenty opportunity to kick on in 2011.
