Did you watch it?
September 2012 I [url=http://leeds.rlfans.com/readarticle.php?article_id=1874wrote an article backing local underground DJ Alex Simmons[/url to take rugby league to another level off the field. Not long after this was published Rugby AM was born as a radio show, and has gone from strength to strength ever since.
Launching November 2012 on the defunct Radio Frequency, Rugby AM had a brief spell on Yorkshire Radio and still airs on Alex Simmon’s online radio station All Star FM. Now four months old as a 90 minutes TV Show on Premier Sports, I finally got round to watching an episode Gogglebox style with the family last night and here’s the reaction.
Let’s begin with the fourteen Mr and Mrs Questions featuring Marwan Koukash and his wife which had witty moments but dragged on for so long it was painful. My dad perfectly summed it up “they really don’t know what to do”. During this point my sister went to get a bath.
Then we had Marwan droning on about his personal history and the ambitions that he has for the sport in this country. I haven’t seen someone go on like this since 2011 when Muammar Gaddafi went on a mad rant about everything which was brilliantly satirised by Charlie Brooker: youtu.be/ySvcdXZH6KQ?t=2m54s
Having said all of that, Marwan Koukash did get a good reaction on twitter for his appearance on the show with some viewers starting to like him for the first time which is needed. I’ve been a fan of Marwan long before last night due to previous interviews with various journalists and was disappointed to learn nothing new apart from pointless trivia which was lost amongst the serious side of the show.
On Facebook Rugby AM is described as ‘fan friendly media, off the cuff League banter’ and on the basis of what I saw last night, the show didn’t really fulfil this promise. It is a Radio Show masquerading as a TV Show which is player friendly media for Alex Simmons and his friends. The fans are rarely featured and when they are, it is a token moment like the Wembley bit.
A great example of fan friendly media is the [url=http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/leeds-rhinos/leeds-rhinos-yep-jury-have-their-say-on-the-challenge-cup-final-1-6796629Leeds Rhinos YEP Jury column in the Yorkshire Evening Post[/url and I think it would be great if Rugby AM had super fans other than Alex Simmons presenting on the show occasionally. However my gut tells me Rugby AM will become as much part of the Rugby League old boys establishment as Boots N All.
I enjoyed Jamie Peacock’s stint on the show but every other special guest made an instantly forgettable appearance. By the time Kyle Amor came on, my sister had finished her bath and was surprised to see that the show was still running. The only person who genuinely rated the whole show was my mum.
I’m still a massive fan of Alex Simmons and what he’s doing for the game but if he wants Rugby AM to be the best show it could possibly be then he needs to start embracing more super fans into his inner working circle. He needs to spend some time researching quality TV outside of rugby league and get some long term media training so he can improve year on year instead of becoming stale like the Sky lot.

| Certainly wouldn’t mind being impersonated by Wayne Godwin in a RLFANS Dupa League special or becoming a non-executive producer coming up with ideas to improve the show.

| I watched just about long enough to hear about a memorable GF between St Helens and Warrington.
Sky's SL Backchat works best for me just a shame it's not a little longer.

Agree with that, they've just got into a discussion about an issue before having to move on. Could easily be an hour rather than 30 mins.

| I watched the first one, and about 15 minutes of the second one before having enough.
It has good potential but it is a long way off yet. I hate to say this as I think Alex Simmons is very passionate about it and it seems to have been his idea and dream but I feel the main problem is that he just is not a tv presenter. The whole thing looks unprofessional and he just seems out of place.
Another problem is there are far too many Yorkshire based people on. It literally feels like Alex Simmons is there and he just invites his mate for a televised get together. Add to that JJBs Yorkshire accent and mumbling put together makes it hard to understand anything of what he says.
Personally I think the show could be good, if they had a wider variety of guests. The main thing though, they need actual tv presenters to front the show, other wise it's going no where I'm afraid.

| Some of the episodes are on youtube. I watched them and a few things came up:
The format of the show is abit repetitive. Basically former/current players having abit of an informal interview, a mini quiz, godwin impressions, and JJB/kirmond going off somewhere to interview/do something.
Most of the players are not very articulate when being interviewed on camera, they may be off camera, but on camera they aren't. So there's alot of stale/cringey moments with the interviews.
The shows lacks video clips (copyright issues?). Whether that be of funny moments, blunders, big hits, good tries, ref banter etc. Alot goes on in a month of rugby that a comedic brain could chew on.
The presenters and guests shouldn't be in suits IMO, it should be more informal to put the players at ease. It's a great idea but it needs alot of improvement.
edit: also i echo everything i hate pies said above regarding the presenter and the panel.

| Did I give up on SL Backchat too early?
I watched about five minutes of one episode years ago and switched it off. Either I have a short attention span or I’m looking at the broadcasting in rugby league through tired and cynical eyes.
Alex would be foolish to give up the main presenting role but he should definitely compromise and bring some professional presenters on board to help out.
I guess Lauren Walker is arguably a professional presenter as she’s [url=http://www.urbantalent.tv/candidates/card/id/43signed up to an agency and has a TV background[/url, but still has a long way to go to match up with the likes of Tanya Arnold and Clare Balding. Being the wife of the show creator’s best friend more than likely got her this gig.
Also I agree with a lot of what FlexWheeler says. The only reason why I enjoyed Jamie Peacock’s contribution to the show is because he came across as seasoned pro. Rugby players with ambitions to work on TV could learn a lot from Peacock, especially from his work in public speaking.

| Can only agree with what's already been said. I really do admire these guys efforts and I hope they succeed, but it needs an awful lot of work. As mentioned above, one of the first things that struck me is that Alex Simmons is not a TV presenter by any stretch. Hopefully in time he'll improve, as I remember a time when Brian Carney was even more wooden than he is now.
The other issue I have with it is that although i'm aware this is borne out of an admiration for the NRL Footy Show, they can do better than to almost make a carbon copy of it. The 'Dupa League' feature with Wayne Godwin is particularly cringeworthy. Basically just Godwin dressing up in any number of wigs/masks/beards and shouting down the mic in his own voice. Then I read on twitter that the show and this segment in particular is apparently hilarious? The twitter feedback all seems a bit forced to me and gives the impression people want to find it funny, and convince themselves it is.
It feels a bit unfair saying all of the above because of the amount of effort they've put in and the fact that I probably couldn't do any better. Rugby League does need a show like this, but I hope they are getting some constructive criticism and improving the show, as well as just retweeting all the praise after every show.

Whilst the idea behind the show is good - making the players more accessible, and giving them a platform to show their personalities rather than the usual mundane 'media trained' responses we get after a game or in press conferences etc. However, I have to agree that the way it is presented is poor - I actually find it embarrassing to watch.
It's a shame, because it is a decent idea, and I've no problem with them taking ideas from other successful shows. Everything to do with the presentation is poor - from the basics of screen presence, tone/volume/colloquialism of the presenters, appearance of all (Surely they could have at least got suits that fit them and not the oversized suits) down to the more detailed aspects such as links between segments and timing/handover between presenters.
I appreciate it's being done on a shoestring budget and therefore they probably don't have the luxury of things like auto-cue or proper production, but it makes it car crash tv. It's the rugby league equivalent of Wayne's World...

I caught a bit of one today on Premier Sports and they were talking about how this "Rugby AM" had started out etc and the future
It felt so cringe worthy I had to change to something else

| Are people being polite by not commenting on Senior? I haven't actually watched it apart from the last 10 minutes of the first show so I don't know how he comes across. Is the lack of comment a version of "if you can't say anything nice so nothing at all"?
I would've thought that he would have been in with a good shout of getting in with the BBC but Crabtree and Wilkins have taken over those spots completely. It just seems wrong to me to have guys presenting who are still playing every week.

| Hadn't even heard of it, so i watched the first 5 mins of episode 1 and was pi55ing myself laughing. JJB was awesome . " I come from the big apple...Bramley haha.
Looking forward to watching this. Yeh, it resembles the footy show, especially Wayne Godwin trying to be Beau Henry but the more rugby league on tv the better.

| I watched an episode a few weeks ago & thought 'How the hell did this get on TV' but I enjoyed the Castleford/Leeds special before the Cup Final. I think the Wayne Godwin 'impersonations' need to go, white people pretending to be black isn't funny. The good thing about the show is watching current players having their say on the game.
