Fair enough, if they're not going to be part of the first team squad and there is nowhere to play them in 2010 then help them find appropriate employment elsewhere.

The change to an under-20 competition will see a lot of clubs doing similar things, giving a trickle down effect to the lower leagues of young players who have come through good junior systems.

It does mean that SL clubs are going to have to be a lot more ruthless with the decisions they make on junior players at 18-19 years old, and you could see a fair few players dropping down the divisions before coming back up to SL if they mature later than others.

With the Franchise system in place and now this I would expect SL clubs to go down the route of formal tieups with National League clubs, even to the stage of owning them.

This also follows on from the Dual registration of players as was agreed for Kyle Amor from the reports I read. (Not fully sure how the Dual Registration thing works though).

Basically, the game is going to eventually follow the Australan model of 12 - 16 'Premiership" (aka SL) clubs and the national league sides being the equivalent of the NSW League or Jim Beam Cup etc.

To be honest, it is how the game has to go .... Leeds are already in an excellent position to flourish under this new system with agreements already in place in Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire (Not to mention France).

Didn't the reserve competition we have this year used to be an Under 21's competition?

Is the new Under 20's competition truly for under 20's or does it have the "you can play a certain number of players over 20" proviso?

Better to let the lads go if they aren't seen as future first-teamers. With recent signings it would appear that Leeds actually want the 'reserves' to actually live up to their name. Wouldn't be at all surprised if one or two of them go well elsewhere - c'est la vie.

This issue with releasing them. The club say that they believe a couple of them could progress into super league players in the future, and we will be monitoring them. We are only releasing because of the new rules for the reserves.

If we really had the partnership with Souths that the club had us believe. Would it not be a better idea to send the best two of these out to Aus for a year, and see how they develop? This obviously is not necessarily Souths first team.

We keep hearing that if player so and so went to Aus he would come back a better player. Well surely that would work with youngsters also. Therefore if we really do think any of these released had any potential why not try that route?

I guess its a big ask for a 18/19 year old, to relocate for 2 years etc. We could also look at the other links we have closer to home, like York and Whitehaven (I think but it could be one of the other cumbrians)

I can't see it being just related to the under 20 comp. next season.

Wigan will probably keep the majority of their current reserve side as only Pryce, Flanagan, Holland and Gee will be over age for next season.

No, our reserves in general are pretty young. It's just that these players have been around a fair few years now and the club probably dont see any sence in keeping them if there isnt really any future at the club. Plus look at the reserve table. It doesnt lie.
