I think that bit about the salary cap was taken out of context.

They offered him a one year deal, just not a 2 year deal. Much the same as Sean Long. Therefore it can hardly be a problem with the cap for next season.

More a case of realizing that some of their youngsters would have needed upgrades by the time Gilmour reached his 2nd year, which may then have caused a problem.

The old cap is starting to bite.. Soliola can't be cheap though.. thought they'd have had room with Long's departure to FC.. obviousley not..

Has he playing centre this year as expected? I'm sure Saints have more than enough youngsters to come through and take his place, at a fraction of the price. Good deal for both sides

If we could have afforded him (not sure whether we can??) then i'd have liked to have seen him at the rhinos, he'd have given us added strength in depth in the back row and also in the centres... but he is 31 and that's possibly a problem depending on our targets for next year and the cap space etc..

Saints have plenty of space under the cap. They just dont offer 30 plus year olds 2 year deals.

Good signing for Shudds is that. A highly under-rated player in my opinion. Good defender, dangerous runner and decent ball skills as well.

I have it on very good authority that Jamie Lyon will definately by joining St Helens for the 2011 season, perhaps this is why they could offer a 2 year deal to Gilmore.

Yeah. I couldn't see how they'd fit Lyon under the cap either.
But by 2011 Cunningham & Gidley will definately have gone and Long & Gilmore are going at the end of this season. I'd assume all of them are in the top earner bracket.

He's recruited to do the same job as Gilmour - front row/centre, as the need arises. Wheeler is doing a fab job supporting Meli at present with Gidley on the other side (he signed up for a further year).

Totally agree El. Brilliant all round player, wouldnt of been un-happy had he of been coming to us next season.
