Why did the RFL switch back to 4 panel traditional balls from the 6 panel ball. And why we're on the topic, why did they change to the 6 panel version in the first place?

Its a conspiracy.

I think the RFL changed back to the 4 panel ball because the 6 panel ball, whilst being easier to pass, was harder to kick accurately.

Cheers - and I take it that they changed to the 6 panel ball because they like to tweak and modify things that don't need changing.

THat's about it I think. I seem to recall an 8 panel ball (mitre?) briefly making an appearance around 2000. A bit too close to spherical for my taste, and presumably most other people's taste.

It was because the current deal with Gilbert expired at the end of 2003

Steeden became the official football for Super League for the 2004 season.

The RFL had a deal with Kukri for other professional leagues at the time and Steeden got that deal with the Kukri one expired.

They were, but they were a bugger when you carried the ball into contact, and a lot more difficult to offload.

I believe they actually changed the design of the 8 panel balls after the first season of using them as they were too"round" ! the second design was a bit longer and thinner and a much better ball, I think the steedons are far better though!

This is true, although they are technically the same company now.
