| They were detested. I think people were scared. Everything was bland disco or stuff with 10 minute keyboard solos and then bang! In came 3 minute rock and roll songs.

No it wasn't that's a complete myth created by the punks and supported by the media. 77 was a great year for music AC/DC let there be rock came out in 77, 30 mins of pure rock n roll that left anything the punks could come up with bleeding in the gutter. Iron maiden was around but refused a record deal because they wanted them to cut theirs hair and look punk. Judas Priest and Motörhead where leading the charge for fast based british metal. Not forgetting the biggist band in the world by some way was led zeppelin. Punk was just a fad, with the execution of 2 or 3 bands

| It was a fad over quickly but it's influence was huge from new wave, new romantic to today. Bands like oasis and razorlight credit punk as having a huge influence on them.
I love ac/dc but they are, and were, mainly an album/touring band. Iron maiden iirc became big about 1980, after punk had gone.

Nah, their "unique" sound isn't quite so unique when you've heard the same track ten times on one album.
Eddi Reader for one - have a listen to her "Love is the way" album when you are in a good, but very chilled out mood.

| Punk & heavy metal = money for old rope, turn the amps up to 11 to disguise the lack of musicianship and songwriting ability.
Peace and Love man, and cake.

Throw in Oasis and their ilk and that's an apt characterisation of musical taste for the average RLFans user, who typically stopped listening to new music sometime in their 20s.

Except that those bands that were mentioned were around when I was in my 20s, there isn't much that is new anymore.

Except some of the best musicians of all time play metal, which cannot be said about punk, bar 2-3 exceptions.
Ps I love punk the clash started out punk and are one of my fav bands & some of my other favs are punk influenced and some of my fav all time songs are punk.
But it was a fad.

the first album by the clash was amazing, the second was ok but the rest was pretentious rubbish.
they didn't start punk it was around years before with the likes of the new york dolls and motor city 5.
what punk did was give song writers like elvis costello, paul weller and pete shelley a chance to shine. there are some great tunes, as in any era, if you look beyond the biggest names.
stiff little fingers remain one of my favourite live bands, there greatest hits live is supurb

You are more than entitled to your own opinion and "list of the best musicians of all time" but if you think that Metal guitarists should be on that list then you need to listen to a few more genres.

Yeah coz the likes of randy Rhodes, Eddie van Halen, slash, tony iommi Richie Blackmore, the twin axes of maiden, priest, thin lizzy, Michael and rudi schenker, ynwie malsteem are not considered great guitarists. You'll be saying next that john bonham, Ian paice, bill ward, Neal peart are not considered great drummers.

London calling it an all time great, and I said the clash started out punk, not they started punk. New York dolls are just gash, 3rd rate sloppy Rolling Stones wannabes never understand that punk connection.

First requirement = volume, lots of it, hides a multitude of sins and simple repetitive chord structures, numbs the audience into believing the hype..
Stick them in a small venue where a handful of people sit two feet away, give them an acoustic guitar and lets see them hold that audience - Lemmy (was it Lemmy) did it for a few minutes for Guinness advert a few years ago, bet he wouldn't make a living doing it though.

| The first band I ever went to see was Thin Lizzy in the old Leeds tram shed.....death trap in the waiting if ever there was one. Still the most memorable for me. They were superb with the two lead guitarists. .... Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson ( I think ) .

| Oh by the way, I am contractually obliged to mention this - for those who like to get in on the ground floor of the next popular beat combo thing - have a look for a band called Rixton, they have a page on Facebook.
OK, yes, there is a vague family connection...
