| just posted this on some UFO sites and now seen reports it was a meteorite.
I=#FF0000 was driving home with my wife who noticed something in the sky and asked what it was. she had seen a bright light looking left out of the passenger side window. She said it looked like a big firework on fire. She then said it was going over the car in the sky. I looked out the RHS window and saw a bright fire in the sky. It looked like a jet engine on a rocket but it was travelling horizontally and flying straight. It appeared to me to be a jet engine which looked to be on fire. It was approx 2000 feet in the sky heading in a south westerly direction. We watched it for a bout 7 - 8 seconds before it disappeared. It would have travelled between 3 to 5 miles from when my wife first saw it and it disappeared. It made no noise at all.
Have there been any reports of meteors or problems with planes in the area?
I can only say it was big bugger and if it landed somewhere it will have nade a big hole.

| Thanks for that.
It was amazing i have seen meteors before ( as shooting stars) but this was a completely different league. It seemed so close and bright and lasted so long it was amazing.

| Maybe the Americans were trying to do a 'secret operation' with an unmanned drone over UK airspace and the RAF shot it down. 'It was a great big meteor' is a good cover story.

| Meanwhile maybe we can all start panicking again as research has been published that says there is a scarily high chance of the Earth being struck by Asteroid 1999 RQ36 in 2182. We only have until 2080 realistically to stop it or deflect it. If we don't, then we are having a roulette-style gamble as the present odds of a collision roundabout then are only around 500-1.
I therefore think this object should be given a proper scary name. 199RQ36 don't cut it.

I think we should call it 'The Great Cleanser'.
If the human race is wiped out then so what? The world loses species all the time why are we worth saving? It'll still be spinning and life will go on in one form or another. I suppose we could spend all our time and money on some sort of big asteroid gun or we could all learn to play the sitar and go to the pub a lot. I'm not going to panic, I've had my fun and I'll be long gone.
Let 'em deal with it in 2182 I say.
