No different from immigration really.
If you were a well off southerner in Cheltenham who had a regular income, full set of teeth and watched high class sport like Gloucester rugby union, would you want a load of northern plebs coming down with their flat caps trying to take your jobs and drinking your beer and wanting to bringing their curious 13 man sport?
It's bad enough with the Eastern Europeans coming over but if the floodgates open to northerners as well it could cause chaos.

| There was a suggestion last week that London's homeless should be moved to places like....Hull.
Seems the South wants to become a more upmarket place. Mind you, with the upcoming drought the North should declare independence and then sell water at huge prices to the South. Trouble is there seems no entrepreneurial spirit up there - too used to State subsidy!

| Presumably he's also in favour of banning well-off Southerners from having second homes in the Cotswolds, which will be a bigger contributor to the housing shortage than economic migrants?

| Way back in the 1980s, when I followed Tebbit's advice and moved to find work, I remember being shocked by seeing an [iEvening Standard[/i 'campaign' that included, if I remember correctly, t-shirts bearing the legend: 'Go home northerners'.
And so, with another recession showing no sign of lifting ...

Maybe we could do what they did in Germany and build a big wall half way across the country and shoot anybody that tries to cross from one side of the country to another.

I moved to London in 1991 and lived there until 2000 .
I think I knew, through work and friends of friends etc, about 4 genuine Londoners. I knew a lot of Scots, a few Scousers, 1 guy from Devon and quite a few people from Yorkshire, plus a couple of Midlanders. Mrs28 is from Hull and I met her as she was also working there (sharing a house with a friend also from Hull).
I wondered then, and still do, if everyone not from London "went home" whether London's economy would suffer. I suspect it would.

You used to be able to go through it. I recall visiting the East to see the pretty girls and drink beer. Those ere the days.

It might have been more difficult, had you been born on the other side of the Iron curtain, and wanted to visit the West to see the entrepreneurs and plentiful commodities of a market economy.
Fortunately Comrade Honecker provided girls and beer proof that socialism provides for your needs if not for all your wants.

I suggest along a line roughly from the Wash to the Dee.
Water smugglers to be severely dealt with.
They've had the benefits of our coal, our engineering, our textiles, our soldiery, our bloody everything (for centuries) ... and then ignored the North when it suited them (pretty much from 1979 onwards).
Plus we had to clear-up the spoil-heaps etc.
They can fook off if they want our water as well.

One meeting with the local residents of The Forest of Dean and most northerners would be winging their way back to civilisation pronto.
Gloucestershire is not all about Cheltenham and pretty Cotswold villages. Most of it, especially Gloucester itself, is a sh[ii[/ithole

Have you ever been to Kingsholm? The creatures that inhabit the Shed would make most Notherners look like the race of super beings that bloke in Moonraker had assembled on his space station.
He also needs to distinguish between the "South" and the "South West". One is full of rich barsterds the other is full of their second homes.

This was something I was thinking about the other day when someone was writing about London / SE being the world's 15th biggest economy and without the North / SW etc taxes could be low. I thought if LONDON had to pay trasfer fees to other regions when graduates, etc moved there (as the capital city) it would even things up! So many bunissess leaders are not natives of London - indeed even alot of people with very upmarket accents turn out to be Northerners when you get talking to them. I reckon if everyone paid taxes to where they were born, rather than were they chose to live / work then London would soon become a very impovershed place.
The serious challenge though is to stop this excessive aggregation in London and the SE. Quite, how is another matter.

Depends how far south west you go. Cornwall don't count, that's an entirely other place. We're pretty friendly down here in Winky but most of us are "blow-ins". In the pub one night, out of around 30 regulars in there, only two were born in Somerset, and none at all in Wincanton

Easy tiger, as a born & bred Londoner living in Cornwall I feel rather alone on this thread now while it may be true that Cornwall has more than it's fair share of goat bothering eyebrow knitting moon faced inhabitants, we lead the way in yiffing down these here parts....................and you bothersome northerners will still come trawing down in your 1000's on your Sun holidays so that you can look at a different set of rugged rocks from those you have at home.
