Leeds Rhinos legend Keith Senior is returning to his roots to put a foot on the coaching ladder.

Senior, who set Super League records for most tries and appearances during a glittering 13-season spell with Leeds, will be part of Sheffield Eagles’ coaching staff next season.

The former Great Britain centre joined Leeds from Sheffield at the end of the 1999 campaign, having begun his playing career with Eagles three years earlier.

The 37-year-old has not played since suffering a serious knee injury more than two years ago, but now works for Rhinos’ charity the Leeds Rugby Foundation.

That will continue, but he is keen to gain coaching experience under former Eagles team-mate Mark Aston.

“It is something I have been thinking about a while, getting into the coaching side of things,” Senior said.

“I know the Eagles’ coach Mark Aston very well and I’ve heard some very good reviews of his coaching.

“That’s one of the big factors. To progress up the ladder you’ve got to have somebody that’s very good in the job they do.

“I played at Sheffield for a long time and I know the set-up and the coaching set-up there. I’ve been down and they’ve got some great training facilities, through Hallam University.

“Their facilities are up there with some Super League teams. They are trying their best to progress the team as a whole and they are going in the right direction.

“It is a massive building progress and they have got people in place for when they do feel the time is right and they are good enough to possibly progress.”

Eagles have won the last two Kingstone Press Championship Grand Finals, beating Featherstone Rovers in 2012 and Batley Bulldogs this year.

“I’ll be getting involved with the first team,” Senior added.

“It is an early step on the coaching ladder for me. I’ve done the amateur set-up, I’ve done the scholarship - under-15s and all that at Leeds - and I think the time’s right to start climbing the ladder.

“I think I have got a good chance of learning something at Sheffield and also having a massive input, with the experience I’ve had throughout my career.”

Senior will continue his work for the Leeds Foundation.

“That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “In the Championship most training is done at night, because it’s part-time rugby.

“I will be taking on a massive workload, because I’ll still be full-time with the Foundation. That does take priority.

“But it is something I want to look at progressing. I feel that doing the Foundation work is great for me, but coaching is something that’s a real challenge and it’s going to test my mind and test the experience I’ve picked up.

“I think it’s a good step for me to take.”
