Rugby League
INTERNATIONAL star Menzie Yere must pass an English test or his future at Sheffield Eagles could be in danger.
The Papua New Guinea centre will take the written and oral examination to confirm his visa to stay in the UK.
Yere has spent two seasons at the club and returned from Papua just before Christmas for preseason training.
The player has full clearance from the Rugby Football League but the new test reflects a tougher attitude by the Government and immigration officials.
Eagles' coach Mark Aston said he had no fears and Yere will pass with "flying colours".
"The test is pretty self-explanatory and Menzie will fly through it," said Aston. "There's some writing, reading, answering questions and a lot of commonsense.
"Menzie won't fail it – one of the main languages in Papua is English and Menzie is pretty switched on in English."
Yere has been one of the Eagles most successful overseas players. In two seasons he has scored 30 tries in 53 games.
Meanwhile Aston has signed Sam Scott, a back row forward from Super League club Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
Scott, a student at Loughborough University, switched to rugby league from union 18 months ago and was one of the outstanding players for Wakefield under-20s squad last season
