He never had control of the ball which came off his hands in a forward direction. That he managed to get his foot to the ball is irrelevant.

if he got his foot to it before or as it hit the ground, I think it would be relevant. If it hits the floor first, then obviously I agree with you.

I [ithink[/i that for it to count as a drop kick you have to have control of the ball with your hands at some point, however briefly. Seem to remember looking it up a few seasons ago after a similar incident. I could be remembering wrong though.

Thought a player had to 'intend' the kick and not just boot it once he dropped it.

If he's got his boot to the ball before it's hit the ground it's play on. If it hits the ground first it's a knock on. Intent doesn't come into it.
