Just stumbled acrosss a match report from an Under 8's game and was stunned by both the tome and content of it and wondered what other people think.
www.pitchero.com/clubs/hullwykea ... _id=690370
Is this right for a team of 8 year old to be obsessed with winning and putting derrogatary comments about the opposition on a publically accessible forum.
Incidentally putting the score on site like this is in direct contravention of the RFL's Child protection guidlines as well.
My thougts are that kids rugby at this age should be about fun and developing skills and team work not simply about creating a win at all costs mentally. The match report talks about " focussing on the job in hand" and describes the opposition as "looking all washed out".
Am I overreacting or is this part of where we go wrong in this country?

| Although not Rovers related, having read the report i think that the OP makes some good points.
Feel free to discuss.

| Sounds to me like the guy has some issues, cant imaging the young lads having to much fun playing under that pressure. Surely at that age enjoying the game takes priority over what the scoreline is, what happens if they lose heavily, extra training sessions?

| I'd like to think the report was written by a (slightly) older brother or sister with journalistic aspirations, rather than the coach.
Don't want to be too negative towards a volunteer, but if it is the coach he should be a bit gentler IMHuO.

| Dont forget that kids are very IT literate in this day and age and even at 8 years old are able to access these types of sites and probably do to see their names in "print" and to see how many tries they are on for the season. This sort of thing can very easily result in playground bullying if some of these kids go to the same schools.

Thats definately something to be considered but the bigger concern to me is that there are people involved in under 8s rugby who see winning games as the major aim.

| I've previously made similar points on a thread on the VT.
There are no checks and balances on coaches at this level once they are registered as coaches. they simply do the course get CRB checked and are then let to go off and coach as they see fit. Its become like passing your driving test, you do what you need to do to pass and then it seems some coaches completely forget everything they've been taught and do as they wish... and this is the result

| I personally don't see the problem with giving kids a winning mentality. In this country we're told that its the taking part that counts too often. Which imo is why we're truthfully not really that good at any sport.

I know it does but it is just that this particular instance has been brought up by the OP. The chances are that if we checked other clubs websites then we may find similar reports. I would expect more from a club like Hull Wyke though and would have thought that somebody at the club would be keeping an eye on match reports and coaches/helpers attitudes.

There is a way to go about it tho. You dont have to be arrogant to be a winner, showing other teams respect even if you are a better side shows class.

You have to remember that match reporters have differing skills and reports are personal rather than to club standards.
Think there is plenty of 'officals' keeping eyes on match reports though.
The report in question made for difficult reading with the CAPS LOCK ON!

| don't forget kids themselves are very competitive at that age and giving them a push could mean they improve further. Not condoning it just saying it's the case, I help out coaching u10s hockey and was there myself a few years ago and the main group of lads are all very competitive and we get plenty of tantrums and sometimes if you push them a little during training exercises it reduces tension between the lads themselves and they just get on with playing instead of bickering about who's better
never anything to the extent of what's in that match report though

| Yes kids are nturally competitive but not to that extent at that age.
I would challenge anyone to ask a team of Under 8's after a game to tell them the exact score and I will guarantee that you will get no more than a couple getting it right if any at all. At that age kids just want to play and that is what should be encouraged
