Agree with that. He hits hard in defence and his positioning etc doesnt seem to be a problem. He does lack pace, he just out ran Luke Dyer on Sunday who was never the quickest but also showed very good evasive skills at the same time. IMO will become a solid if not spectacular fixture in the team for years to come.

| I'd have said his defence was solid, still think he has the potential to be one of the best SL centres.

Welham?
Could turn out to be a solid and reliable centre but I would not go that far.

I think personally he looks as good a prospect for Rovers as Briscoe does for us.

If you are referring to his try, think you will find it was their No.6 Quinn who he fended off. Luke Dyer wouldn't get near him.

There are a few decent youngsters coming through, but in recent years being solid and reliable would put you among the best (of British, at least) SL centres, I'm afraid.
I think sometimes people bang on about defence as they feel they are more rounded, sophisticated students of the game than those who get excited about players who 'only' score tries. Defence is obviously important, but given that the two Hull clubs were the lowest scorers in SL last year I think that maybe we should be a bit more ready to forgive the odd lapse if a player offers something extra in attack.
Regarding Welham, IMO he should be signed-up for 3 or 4 years ASAP.

I know stats are not the most accurate measure of real playing ability but after 5 rounds of Super League; Kris Welham has missed more tackles than any other player in the entire league. Even more than any player from teams like Salford and Warrington who are shipping considerably more points than Hull KR.
Most Missed Tackles 2009
1 Kris Welham Hull KR 23
2 Luke Robinson Hudds 22
3 Scott Moore Hudds 20
4 Scott Murrell Hull KR 20
5 Gareth Hock Wigan 20

That surprises me, wouldnt expect Murrell or Hock to be down there either, although i think most of Hocks 20 came on Friday night!

I've always said he wasn't good enough. P45, NOW!
I don't now if it applies to SL or to Welham, but I remember reading an NRL player complain that he was 'credited' with missed tackles because he was more willing to chase lost causes to cover his colleagues mistakes - that if you get a finger tip on someone it is missed tackle.

TBH though I can't remember any of his missed tackles been bad though, causing a try etc, it's taken out of context anyway.

Hock and Murrell make alot more tackle though, Welham's percentage of tackles made to missed is poor, but something he can work on.
To be fair his defence stats arent as bad as Chev Walker.

Murrell needs to stop trying to "clean out" everyone he tackles and simply tackle the man and wrap the ball up. Sometimes it pays off like against Brad Drew but he needs to be a little more selective cos his defence is excellent when he keeps it simple.
Agree about Whelam, but a stint out of the team might help him focus on his weaknesses before he gets another chance.
Chev gets a lot of stick for isolated cases when smaller centres side-step him but that is merely a consequence of being 6ft 4" and the best part of 17st. The guy simply needs to be left to do his job and we'll start to see the best of him.

It was Quinn who has an uncanny look of Luke Dyer out on the pitch.

Why? Because you're completely incapable of assessing the strengths of a Rugby League player?
Briscoe will never make a world-class three-quarter because he lacks [igenuine[/i pace however his pyhsical strength is greatest attribute and I expect this to be utilised as he gets older - he'll probably be employed as a second-rower in 3 or 4 years time.

Depends how you assess a player.
Houghton is an out and out scooter.
K Netherton has a better all round game as a hooker IMO.
