Disappointed that he's going, but if the fee is as reported then I can very much see why. Had a couple of decent years from him, and it's not like we paid anything for him. Roughly equivalent to selling 500 extra passes for next year.

That said, we do desperately need good replacements for him and J.Hodgson, or that gain might be wiped out by a drop in sales and next season, this year might seem like the good old days.

To lose Green, Dobson, Hodgson and Burns over 3 seasons - well I guess you can look at it as a clean slate for Chester, or the mother of all rebuilds.

IMO Keating's problem is being part of a partnership with an over-bearing 6. Keating has been in Travis's shadow although the one game where Keating dominated was in the draw against Wigan - Travis had a battle royal with Green so had to leave Keating to his own devices, and I thought we saw the player that helped the Doggies get to the GF.

As for finding a replacement for Keating, its bad enough sourcing one pivot but Rovers might well be looking for three!!!

Tripe, Dobson hit the ground running, 8 tries in 14 appearances and he immediately became the focus of our attack.

Don't forget, he had already tasted SL with Catalan & Wigan so this no doubt helped him settle quickly.

The only two Pacific Islands halves I can think of from Parra are Joseph Paulo, a Samoan who represented USA in the world cup, and Api Pewhairangi, who is half Maori and half Irish and represented Ireland in the World cup.

Joseph Paulo would probably be good in the ESL. There was talk of him going to Newcastle a few weeks ago, but it came to nothing. He is a big guy who defends well and often plays in the forwards. He generally plays 5/8 when he plays in the halves, and was probably the best player for USA in the world cup, where he was allowed to be the main playmaker. Most NRL fans would say he isn't a good enough playmaker for the NRL at 5/8, and not strong enough for the forwards - but most would agree that he has a lot of skills. (now I suppose someone will point out a Tongan I've completely forgotten)

He is 21 and was captain of the Penrith side that won the under 20s last year.
He is a former Newcastle junior who went to Penrith with former Newcastle under 20s coach Garth Brennan a few years ago.
I don't know if he is injured, but he isn't getting a run for Penrith reserve grade at the moment.
I haven't seen much of him since he was about 17 and playing under 18s for Newcastle.
I didn't think much of him then, but obviously he has had some success since then.
It would be a huge risk to sign a guy who has never played firstgrade, but he could turn out to be a very good player.

If Mike Smith comes back with someone of that calibre we may as well just pack in our attempts at youth development. What's the point if we are signing total novices from t'other side of the world?

To play devil's advocate, Danny Foster was captain of Penrith under 20s last year, and that side would easily be the best under 20s side in the world last year. They went through the comp without anyone looking like they were anywhere near the same class. The few games they lost were largely because they placed many of their best players up a grade in reserve grade for parts of the year to improve their games.
This year many of the same players have taken Penrith to the top of the reserve grade, and while I haven't taken much notice, Foster could have been a big part of that.
He was picked for Tonga in the world cup. They don't have many halves to pick from, but it's still a big wrap for an under 20s player.
He hasn't played firstgrade, but he could well have the same sort of status and potential Dobson had when he went to the ESL. He has certainly been an important part of the best junior development squad in the world right now.
My feeling is that he would be going to the ESL (if it is happening) to advance his career, and wouldn't be asking for much money - just enough to live on I'd expect - and he is a big lad - well over 6 foot and about 95kg - so he should be able to hold his own.
He also plays hooker.
Even if he didn't work out, I don't think he'd cost you much, and he could work out really well.
