I saw Newton play nearly 100 games for Newcastle.
I saw Paterson play nearly 80 games for Newcastle.
Newton had a few purple patches, but most of the time he struggled to hold down a starting spot.
Cory had his good times and his bad times. During the good times he was one of the first picked alongside Steve Simpson. During the bad times he was still as good as Newton.
Both of them struggled to play out 80 minutes - both more like 60 minute players.
Newton rarely broke the line. Cory regularly broke the line.
Cory is taller, heavier, faster, more athletic. Newton would be a better playmaker, have a better passing game, and he probably has a bigger heart and puts in more when the team is struggling.
I didn't see any of Newton's games for you, but on Newcastle form you would pick Cory ahead of Newton every time - and i'd pick Zeb Taia (going to Catalans) ahead of either of them.

I've read Cory Paterson is earning Aus$300,000 pa (circa £190,000) at present. That can't be right, can it?

Contrast this with how I have been informed Rovers have not broken the new 'ceiling' (reportedly £70-£85,000pa) to sign Cory, if this is the case then it is one helluva drop in income.

In Rovers terms, again assuming he is coming over on the higher scale, that doesn't translate into the cheap option being touted in some quarters.

If he turns out to be half as good as Roopy says he is, then we have got ourselves an extraordinary signing in more ways than one.

As he left Newcastle mid season i'd doubt that unless his contract was back loaded.

You never know he could be allowed to box to raise extra revenue.

When Cory signed a 300k contract at Newcastle he was 21 or 22 and he seemed very close to SOO selection because he had already gone well for the Aboriginal All Stars. He was in a lot of demand at that stage.
I think he could still get a decent NRL contract, but reading the article in the Newcastle Herald this morning i think he has decided to take less money and go for a new start. He is still young, but i imagine in two years time he will want to sign for big dollars.
Holding an British passport could mean he is looking at playing for England - can't see why not?

The £70k ceiling has been rubbished by Rob Crossland on t'other forum.

It'd make little sense, tbh. It's very possible that they've said they'll only pay more for 'key players' or something like that, but there are all ready more than enough restrictions on building a squad without adding arbitrary ones of your own.
It's also [ipossible[/i that none of the players we sign this year will be on more than that, but that doesn't make it a policy.

If you recall you outlined a tiered-model on how you figured the Salary Cap operated. In many respects each of those tiers operated within a band-width and as such a ceiling. Whilst I don't believe Rovers have a rigid model it makes sense to me your hypothesis wasn't far off the mark, and if my source is right CP fits into the 2nd tier.

For the record, I do not know what CPs contract is worth with Rovers, and I was actually questioning the reports that he was on mega bucks in Oz and then referencing it to Roopys evaluation of CP.

'Ceiling' just sounds a bit rigid to me and I wouldn't want CS's hands tieing, certainly not at £70k or even £85k. That said, our key playmakers - Dobson and Green - are already in place, so we might well be only making 'second tier' signings this year.

As for Cory Paterson, never heard him get a mention on NRL fulltime.
