I'm sure we had this conversation last year but watering holes en route to Barrow? Barring the Hawkshead Brewery on-site bar and the Watermill at Ings, I don't know of any. Any pointers? I hear there's a good 'un at Ambleside.'"
The Punchbowl www.the-punchbowl.co.uk/ between Kendal & Bowness is Michelin pub of the year. More of a hotel/gastropub the beer, especially the Taglag, is always excellent, in stunning surroundings (don't confuse it with the other Punchbowl in Underbarrow about 2 miles towards Kendal). Through Crosthwaite, heading West, take the second left to Bowland Bridge to the wonderful Masons Arms. www.strawberrybank.com/directions.htm. Views to die for. Great food too.

| Just got back from an interesting Real Ale jaunt;
Adnams Broadside at the Parish Oven, Thorpe Salvin.
Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter at the Royal Oak, Ulley.
Milestone Raspberry Wheat Beer at The Bluecoat, Rotherham.
Talking of the Bluecoat, looking forward to my next visit as it will be renovated in the next few days and the Quiz bandit owes me £11.

Set off last visit to Barrow with the intention of locating the Ambrose Hotel which has a very good reputation. Travel problems mean't we only just got to the game on time so alas it wasn't to be.
If you manage a visit, let us know what you reckon to it.
Details;
Ambrose Hotel, Duke St, Barrrow-In-Furness, Cumbria, LA14 1XT.

Spot on with these, tigertot. Took them both in yesterday. The Tag Lag was superb as was the Westmoreland Gold. Also sampled the excellent Hawkshead Lakeland Gold at the beautifully-situated Masons Arms, together with an Ulverston brew whose name escapes me.
Also found the time to drop into the Booths at Ulverston for a selection of local brews including the bottled versions of the aforementioned Tag Lag and Lakeland Gold.
Had some very decent fish and chips for £4 in the centre of Barrow too.
Pity about the result

You had a whole pin?!?!?!?
You're my hero.
Just had a delicious pint of Acorn Eggcracker at the Old Market Hall, Mexborough followed by a pint of E & S Nettlethrasher.
Lovely stuff.
Am now supping the allegedly carbon neutral Adnam's East Green, one of the bottles purchased from Booth's at Ulverston. Very nice indeed!

Had the Eggcracker in the Kelham Island Tavern a while ago - as you say, delicious.

| For all those non-real ale aficionados out there, who haven't a clue what we're talking about, a pin is equivalent to 36 pints.
Don't you feel enriched?
