I wonder if we could get some advertising for the Dons at the beer festival. Could be a good opportunity.

HoS not what it was, had to make do wih Black Sheep. Next door to the Kings - much better - Kelham Island Pale Rider & (I think) 888, can't remember the brewery. Then on to Wetherspoons Cherry Tree, things are a bit hazy but something from the always excellent Saltaire Brewery IIRC. Fell asleep on the train, woke up at a staion, panicked & jumped off 2 stops too early. Had to wait 30 minutes in the freezing cold for the next one. Sobered me up a little bit though.

| Called at the Hickleton Village Club this evening and had a couple of pints from the Acorn Brewery.
A pint of Barnsley Bitter followed by a pint of the excellent Sovereign.

| Looking forward to a couple of pints in the Salutation tomorrow.
Waits for Paul (weighman) to remind me about priorities.

| Have been sampling a boatload of bottled beer lately ( yes, it's taken me that long to get stuck into my Xmas presents! ).
In no particular order:-
Northern's Soul Rider ( a lighter imitation of Kelham's Pale Rider but quite drinkable nonetheless ), Two Tone Special, a palatable porter, and a very pleasant, Soul Time.
Weetwood's Eastgate Ale, one I would purchase myself.
Coach House, Cheshire Gold, a fairly unremarkable pale ale.
Shepherd Neame, Spitfire, Heather Ale's Fraoch and Felinfoel Double Dragon, the best of the lot!

| Had Kelham Island's Bete Noire the other day, which ranks alongside Saltaire's Hazelnut and Coffee porter, Acorn's Gorlovka and Hook Norton' s Double Stout as the best dark beers I have tasted in many a year. I'm sure there'll be more!

| seuseuwho? if you like dark beers watch out for Monkmans Slaughter by the Cropton Brewery, and Exmoor Beast by Exmoor Ales. Exmoor Beast was on in the Old Angel a few weeks back.

| A while since I've sunk a pint of Beast, but it brings back good memories .
Been to the New Inn at Cropton several years ago but failed to sample the Slaughter. Thanks for the nudge.
Another one to add to the list is Pot Belly's Beijing Black, SIBA's Supreme Champion this year. Excellent beer.

Back from a week in Aviemore easily the best from a poor choice was Cairngorm Brewery Trade Winds, a delicious pale;

Also tried the wonderfully named Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale from Tyranena Brewing Company. Great childish fun asking the barmaid what beers they had on each time we went to the bar.

| A real mixed bag for me yesterday ...
A couple of quality pints on arrival in Wood Green. Firstly a Courage Directors in Spouters Corner (the Wetherspoons) followed by a Brains SA in the Goose across the road.
A taxi up to the Skolars Bar where hopes were dashed. A Green King IPA clip on a handpump but alas all that was available was Johns Smooth.
However, the fate that awaited me at the stadium was to really put that in perspective. Jemmo arrived at the bar shortly before us and turned to me stating 'you won't be happy'. He wasn't wrong! Only Carlsberg on draught or Carlsberg in bottles. No wait, they have got bottles of Magners. My first thought was not to bother at all but I confess, I settled for the Magners.
Back to Wood Green after the match and the Jolly Anglers where they did have Greene King IPA Chilled. Not what I'd call real ale but better than the cider or the John Smiths.
Later someone erroneously tried to charge us £8 each to get in a pub in Kings Cross. Fortunately, there was another pub not too far away without an entrance fee.

On the subject of dark beers, on Saturday I tasted the best beer I've sampled this year, Impy Dark from the Brampton Brewery in Chesterfield. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a dark beer - despite a choice of 4 other beers I had to have a second pint to confirm my first impressions.

I was drinking it in The Tavern in Warrington, where it was on as a guest beer. The brewery has a website ( www.bramptonbrewery.co.uk/) if you want more information - there are contact details there, so if they are typical friendly microbrewers they should be able to tell you where you can sample their beers.
