Raiders sack Schofield

BARROW Raiders are believed to have sacked head coach Garry Schofield after only five games in charge of the club.

Chairman Des Johnston swung the axe at Craven Park today only four months after appointing the former Great Britain captain as successor to Steve .Mccormack

Schofield endured a turbulent spell in charge at Barrow, his four games in the Northern Rail Cup seeing the side win two and lose two as they were eliminated at the group stage for the first time since 2005.

The 16-12 defeat at Dewsbury which saw Raiders knocked out of the competition was followed by an under-par 56-26 victory over amateurs Leigh Miners Rangers in the Challenge Cup third round.

Schofield himself declined to comment on the situation when contacted by the Evening Mail.

If not for sacking him then for hiring him in the first place. What's the point of hiring a guy and then letting him go with a few games under his belt?

The appointment of Schofield in the first place was a massive mistake. He is an absolute clown who, IMO, poured shed loads of disrespect onto the great coaches in the game with his bullshlt vision of 'attacking rugby'. May have worked IF he had the slightest idea of how to coach defense !! No technical ability whatsoever.

Im afraid Des appears to have been duped big time by this clown and Martin Crompton should have been given the job in the 1st place.....problem now is that who in the right mind would want to coach Barrow now



I said the minute big fat Garry Schofield was appointed that the preverbial turd would hit the fan with him. Unfortunatley that clown has had his mitts on a top set of players and may have ruined the season before it has started. Hopefully whoever gets the job can get his systems in quickly and get some type of response from the players...........I am ecstatic that he has gone because if he had stayed then the playoffs were only a pipe dream, never mind winning anything !

<sigh> i find myself sat here wondering if it will ever occur to uncle Des thats he is the common denominator in all the coaching staff related chaos thats gone on at his club.
maybe he should sack himself? he hires these people in the first place, then by all accounts often makes it impossible for them to do their jobs. so an idiot on both counts.

Whoever takes the job wants their head checking.

The thing is Gary that it looked like you had Crompton all lined up and for whatever reason the announcement just seemed to be delayed. From the outside it looks like Des is only interested in the name rather than the reputation and swooned the minute Schofield's name was mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't brought in to increase the clubs exposure in the media but this just doesn't look like it has happened.
When all is said and done the guy had been around four or five games which isn't very long to implement any new style of play. I accept what you said about the defence but it's not even as if the guy has had a go at putting it right since the last game. It's not like you're coming off the back of a defeat this weekend.

I don't think you will have too much problem getting a new coach in as Des will throw his wallet behind the appointment but the issue will be keeping them. After the last game I was amazed to hear Des berating the coaching staff for the team's performance. He brings in the players he wants, he gives half time team talks in important games, he publicly criticises them in the media. It's a bizarre set up looking from the outside in. Ordinarily you would expect him to be commenting on the club from a commercial point of view but he seems to be wielding your club like an eccentric game of RL Manager.

Just been told by a VERY reliable source that Des is considering becoming the head coach himself rather than bothering with the hiring and firing every few months.

Now you may be joking here but everyone of us is thinking...

"is he actually being serious?" Such is the ludicrousness of the situation up there.

Dessie has completely lost it now. What coach, in his right mind, would want to go there now. They’d have to be desperate.

Do the Barrow fans really think Brian Noble would go there. They must be even more delusional than I thought they were, if they do.

Old Dessie boy may have no option but to coach the team himself. Every pro coach, worth his salt, will probably have told him to off.

Come on Des you're getting predictable now. He really needs to do something unexpected like appoint his favourite horse coach or something.

Well I feel a tad sorry for Gary Schofield OBE. I do not understand why anyone would agree to work for Des Johnson. Absolutely no justification for the things he does. He has no trust for his coaches, and the atmosphere must contribute more than anything to their failures. I didn't think Schoey was going to do much, he has been out of the game for too long and his criticisms of the modern game always come off as someone too old fashioned to really understand it, but he can't have been given much encouragement there or a chance to succeed.

Who next? One man optimistically predicts Brian Noble steering them into super league. I suspect it will be more like Des Johnson steering them into Championship 1. They are a long way from being ready for the top flight, further than ever, and until they are ran professionally, they wont ever change that.
