Hope he profits from the injuries we have in the back division and gets a solid run of games. There's a right player in there IMO. Another one I'd like to see us sign up.'"
Quote there from Hodgson
“I felt there was really good support around him as well, he had players saying to him ‘don’t worry about it, just get on with the next job"
After Wynne had made a mistake Reynolds ran over to him and did this which was good to see. Must have boosted the kids confidence as he had a good game after a couple of early errors.

Josh and Wynne spend a lot of time with each other off the pitch too, so bound to be supportive on the pitch

that's good stuff, you've made the error, get support from colleague/s, then move on with the process, next set or x minutes set yourself mini goals sticking to the plan set by the coach without trying to 'make up' for the previous error because that can oft end in more mistakes by over-reaching.

Spot in approach that.
Too often, players try too hard after an error, as opposed to just sticking to the basics. All players make a mistake throughout the season, so no apologies required, just get on with the game.
I’ve been impressed with Wynne this season. He had a terrible day v Wigan in the Cup last season, but he’s moved on and is proving a real asset to us this season when called upon.

| Potentially an outstanding Super League player and has shown impressive versatility to by more than holding his own in the centre position.
Looking at Hulls backline with the likes of Bureta, Fonoa, Tuimavave, Griffin, Reynolds, Sneyd, all top players but I don't think I'd be far wide of the mark by saying Hull are possibly the oldest backline in Super League and maybe the slowest.
Finding a consistent spot for Connor I think would benefit you.

| I wouldn't say they are the oldest, I think Griffin is the only 3 quarter over 30, faraimo leaving and being replaced by mcintosh (supposedly) who is much younger. They might not all be speed demons but with Connor, tuimavave and fonua we probably have one of the most skillful backlines in superleague.

| Looking forward to seeing what Wynne can do with his opportunity.
Add McIntosh to Swift, and we look a lot quicker
Carlos is no slouch, and we have Shaul to come back in somewhere.
Also remember Griffin can cover the ground pretty quickly if required. Did it a couple of times in September 2016
I know the Coote thread has been locked, but it smacks of us signing Long from Saints. Surprised they didn’t make a play for Shaul. Would have been a better signing in some ways.

definitely the slowest but its a balance of power/speed.
Love to see Mamo waltz past defenders showing footwork and great speed but would you want to change Carlos for Mamo?
If we still had Ratu with Swift on the other wing we would be talking about what a fast backline we have.

Probably because it'snothing to do with Hull FC, this being the Hull FC discussion forum.

Tuimavave can kick if need be but doesn't in general play that much, he's a decent passer but what are you defining as skillful?
I don't see Griffin as being extraordinarily 'skillful' but is a very good player when he's on it, and I'd definitely not place Fonua in the skillful bracket, he can offload out the tackle, wriggle free, is forceful, good in the air in attack but skillful?
We certainly need to be looking forward and deciding now how the shape of our backline develops for next season and beyond, the forwards, I feel, are a little bit easier at present with certain players coming through already, only the long term replacement for Houghton is unknown.
Most the senior squad should be looking over their shoulders, playing like their jobs are on the line and no-one is protected or offered contract extensions because replacing them might be a bit hard logisitics wise.
If we can get more home grown talent into the backline cemented for the future that can only be good for the club.

I guess skillful is down to opinion, I would say fonua being able to catch and pass in the air or come up with a crazy offload is skillful, same with Carlos he's great at poking through the line and offloading inside.
I think going forward our backs are in decent shape with Scott and Wynne looking promising and some good youngsters waiting for a chance, Houghtons replacement is vital, the club need to get this one right, we've seen how the likes of Roby, Clark and Mcshane dictate so much of their clubs attacking play.
We definitely need another prop to help Sao and Satae, hopefully Taylor will be back firing soon.

I see skilfull as being a player that can pass well 99% of the time, so the receiver doesn't have to 'reach' whatever direction that is and do so at the right time so the pass isn't intercepted or is a 'hospital' pass, can draw the tacklers in. Someone who can sell a dummy, can read defences or read the attack, is able to position themselves both in attack/defence such that they gain an advantage through skill/using their brain not just physicality.
Richard Whiting was one of the best regards this in modern times for us, wasn't amazing physically compared to some but had a great skillset, a clever rugby brain and had a great work ethic to boot, that to me is a skillful player.
All players have some 'skill', the mere act of playing the game demonstrates that at any level, but if we are to define 'full of skill' AKA skillfull, our most skilfull player is Connor, Albert Kelly had a lot of skill, the likes of Tuimavave, Sneyd, Reynolds have a more varied skillset than others in the team but aside from Connor I don't see our backline being that skillful over and above other teams in the way I perceive it to be. it's an opinion of course.
I hope Taylor does come back firing all cylinders, but in my head I'm worried that he's past his peak and he's going to struggle to get back to anywhere near his 2016/17 form when he was an absolute beast, as was Watts and Bowden wasn't far behind. Hoping to be wrong but whether it was the efforts in the past where he took a lot on that have taken its toll, an injury that hasn't truly gone away or whatever, even when he was fit, the last 1.5 years he seems to be a level below where he was.
Being objective and with no sentiment, as the likes of Wigan are, we seriously need to be more ruthless when considering players that are going to stymie youth development or are on the slide, too often we've kept hold of players a year or two too long and that's cost us performance wise whilst stopping youngsters developing and worse they simply leave the club.
I hope Hodgson can get the balance right, whilst injuries dictate to a degree who plays as with Wynne now, we need to look longer term and not jump to sign externally which is usualy at greater cost for a shorter term perceived gain, it's always a balancing act of wanting to get the best team in the here and now, but it's primarily long term youth development that wins more silverware over time in the current salary cap system.
