We had an attendance of 12,044 for the Good Friday derby in 1997 however the all time record for a game outside the top division was 12,424 - also from us - in the 1978-79 game against New Hunslet which saw us complete the season with a 100% record.

| In 1978-79 as a Division Two club we had a higher average attendance than every club in Division One.

Every league game, yes 26 out of 26, we had won the last game of the 77/78 season too so had an unbroken run of 27 winning league games.
The 78/79 season we played 40 competitive matches losing 5 + 1 draw, including three losses to Bradford in the Yorkshire(3rd rd) John Player(3rd rd) & CC (3rd rd after a draw at odsal) also losing to St.Helens in the 3rd rd of the BBC2 and lastly to Australia 34-2 (att:10,713) Only Bradford, Widnes & St.Helens had a higher att for the tourists club matches.
Could you imagine 12k+ crowds in the Championship these days!

| That 1997 Derby at the Boulevard was a great occasion. Got there early to watch the Academy match (you beat Bradford if memory serves). No sign of the big crowd to come. Had a players family pass at the time so let myself out of the ground to have a few beers in the Supporters Club with friends before the game. When we emerged there were police on horsesback sorting the queues to the Airlie Street turnstiles!
Great crowd, great atmosphere and no trouble.
(We would have won if Gary Atkins had any pace).

We got 8859 against Huddersfield in the April and 7194 for the defeat by Featherstone which was the first loss of the league campaign after seventeen wins and a draw.

You're thinking of Hobbs

Think he's referring to Charlie Stone giving the penalty away which cost us the game.

the idiot in charge gave them a penalty..yeah..I guess. But we were a shambles, too cocky and didn't play to our strengths..we wuz shocking and should have walked it..story of the 80s. Bunting had all that talent and couldn't get them to win the big games when it mattered, he was a bang average coach in my humble opinion. Had we had a Roy Francis in charge we'd have won everything during that spell.

Never mind Gary Atkins if Paul Rouse hadnt had butter on his fingers you may have sneaked a win!
Great day and the first real sign that we were on the up after a few barren years mid 90's crowd wise - we even had to queue for a beer at half time in the leagues bar! Unheard of since 1991.
