Good news, but I really don't like the idea of him moving to prop next season. We've already got good numbers in the front row unless someone is leaving which I can't see, although I did hear that Green was linked with Fev? How true that is I don't know but I can't see it.

As for prop, I thought there was an outside chance of it this year before we finished our recruitment, and it's always been a possibility for him.

Personally I would have waited until a few games into next year, as he will be still taking up a decent wage (even though I reckon it will be less than his current deal.

I think the move to prop could be a good move depending on our recruitment.

I could understand if he was a 19 year old starlet whos burst on to the scene this season.

Thinking about it though, could we have possibly have created ourselves a bit of wiggle room for next year by doing it now? Say he was on £150k a season, what if he's just signed for £120k for the next 2 now? Costs the club an additional £90k, but gives him that £90k for another year of security and frees up £30k on our cap for next year.

Guess you've got to try and find some positives

That's the Rovers' fan view of any of our signings over 30. Seems that, with a few exceptions, that can be increased to 35 generally anyway.

He was brought into deliver leadership on the field, I must be blind as I don't see the consistency of impact proportionally to the predicted size of salary. Waste of time and money and reflects what is wrong at our club. Gareth is a great person and good on him for negotiating a great deal. He certainly won't be the worst player in 2015. I just question our desperately poor player recruitment strategy.

You have no idea of his salary or what negotiations (if any) took place for his contract extension.

Correct that's why I said predicted Salary at didn't try and guess a figure.

There has to have been some negotiation however small, otherwise there would be no extension.

This one will get mixed reactions due to age and his assumed salary. He has been one of our better players this year but as someone else mentioned his leadership qualities are on a par with Radfords leadership qualities when he was captain.
Morley and Peacock are 36/37 and still doing the business, lets hope Ellis can do the same and lets face it he is a spring chicken compared to those two.
A lot of fans are looking to have a go at the club/coach/players over any little thing at the minute but if we have managed to do some maneuvering with his salary then it is a decent bit of business albeit with an element of risk thrown in. But every player has an element of risk regardless of age.

Salary considerations aside I'd be delighted if our starting pack next year could be Ellis, Houghton, Ellis, Ellis, Ellis(c), Westerman with Ellis, Ellis and Ellis on the bench.

Think the inevitable switch to prop needs to happen gradually because the physicality of playing in the middle will be a massive change from running over halfbacks who he lining up against right now. As for him getting a new deal it's fully deserved as he's been out best player this season although I don't think he is vocal enough on the pitch to be a captain.

Still not overly keen on moving him to prop, really don't he is prop material IMO and would be a waste there anyhow, as we haven't got a like for like replacement unless they are thinking Minichello is going that side?

I think that's the problem they are both left sided players.
When a player is comfortable in a position it makes a big difference.
Ellis was not so effective when moved to the right
