I agree with your salary cap thoughts Wilf. The thing that I find hardest to work out though is that despite the RL clearly wanting to avoid a Wigan style dominance of the sport, we still have the same two teams in the GF for the third year running. It used to be the big 4 then we knocked on the door, but we now have a big two, who in all honesty but for drawing against each other in the cup may well have contested the CCfinal each of those years.

What the authories fail to realise though is that when Wigan were dominant the sport recieved far more publicity and we had far more well known players who non RL fans could name and recognise. The sport was very popular away from the heartlands during Wigan's dominance where as it is hardly mentioned imo anymore. Progress eh.......

The salary cap was fine when it had the percentage of turnover limit as well as the maximum spend limit. That allowed clubs with a larger turnover to spend more than clubs with a smaller turnover.

Now that everyone can spend the same, regardless of turnover, the advantage of having a successful commercial organisation has been reduced. Although you still have to actually have the money to spend, of course.

There is some attempt in the grading of the licenses to recognise this fact, as those clubs with larger support and better commercial setup will get better grades and more security of tenure, but I wonder whether this is enough.

Personally I'd favour the return of the percentage of turnover limit and maybe a raising of the maximum cap.

Great read Wilf, totally agree about the cap. plus some great and not so great memories from the past, at least the bad times make the good time even better. That Cold cold night is one I will never forget, I still can not believe the game went ahead.

Great read Wilf as usual. Found the salary cap comments interesting and i admit to not really knowing too much about the workings of it.
Fair play to the RFL for trying to make the whole competition closer which they have done, however i think there could me more dispensation to players who have been groomed by a club.

We currently have a 50% reduction up to 50,000 on a players wage after they have been at a club for ten years. However i think they could widen this to all club trained players (need to have played for that club since youth age, and no other professional team) and increase the maximum amount.

This would do 2 things.

1, Get clubs more interested in developing thier own youth players.
2, more home grown talent = a better internation team in the future.

A bit harsh holding a grudge against Parramatta for nabbing Brian Smith when in actual fact it was, i believe, St George! Dont think he went to Parra until he left Bradford.
