either way he's fine, if he doesn't get a job paying more than £21k (probably nearer £23 by the time he graduates) then he'll pay nothing, if he gets a job earning £60k by the time he is 30 then he'll pay it back fairly quickly.

| Quote ="Staffs FC"[url=http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11483638Q & A's on the Government's proposals on tuition fees[/url'"
Quote Students taking three-year courses charged at £6,000 will leave university with about £30,000 of debt - if fees go up to £9,000, debts will be closer to £38,000.
The government says the lowest-earning 25% of graduates will pay less than they currently do. But most others will pay more - the highest earners almost double what they currently pay.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies says that, for about half of graduates, the plan is essentially a 9% graduate tax for 30 years, because they will not finish paying off the debt by the 30-year cut-off point.
Assuming fees of £7,500 for a three year degree, plus maintenance loans, its modelling shows that the top 10% of graduate earners will clear their debts, on average, in about 15 years. But a middle-earning graduate would need to earn, for example, an average of £48,850 a year for 26 years to pay off their debt.
The IFS also says about 10% of graduates will pay back, in total, more than they borrowed.'"
So much for the average student being better off. A 9% additional tax for the majority of your working life. What a fantastic incentive to improve yourself and contribute to your country's future prosperity.

The problem is that many jobs that need a £9k/yr degree won't pay anything like £60k/yr. Most engineering jobs for example. Which means that people on lower salaries will end up paying more for their degrees than people on higher salaries. Farcical.

Correct...let us consider Hull very few people earn £60k, the average earings in Hull are 23k.
People are also forgetting the majority of students often have to go into digs, they need to have money for bills, foods etc, unless they have parents who fund all this (most of us cannot afford to on our earnings), they then have to take out student loans....It is shambolic!

| Quote ="OmneFC"Yes, the schools and NHS improved,
But at what cost? it was unsustainable - almost all of the capital investment made by labour throughout their last term in office was done through the form of PFI - basically getting companies to invest the money now, at a promise of around 30% interest on their investments - purely to keep them off the books.
Labour were reckless in government, and now refuse to accept blame'"
And when Maggie had brought in the options for tenants buy their council house, why did she also stop councils from replenishing their stocks using the monies paid for this purpose so they could make sure there would the capital available to reinvest in social housing for poor people. Did she? Did she hell!!
Now, we have no houses for social tenants to 'bid for'.......only places to line the pockets of richer landlords...and these do not do repairs, and some, or so I saw like that Police Crime officer who had found a good scam of "buying council tenants via 'right to buy' and then robbing the poor once again.
I would love to know up the outcome of the that scam shown on tv this past week........grannyfan Cindy

If you had attended University or funded a child you would appreciate the costs involved...accomodation, food, bills etc and have a realistic view of the situation. So as you see it is not just about £9k fee,s it is paying back student loans, the pressure put on middle class families to support children etc etc.

I (eventually) worked hard for my degree, had to have a job during my degree, didn't live at home, and have left with debts of around £30k.....
So what? I chose to do the degree in the knowledge that my average income will be higher because of it
Look at the US, they charge about 4 times more than we do for a degree, and it certainly hasn't harmed their society,
university should be based on a cost benefit scenario,
if the benefits outway the costs, then do it, if they don't, then don't

I went to University for 14 weeks and realised I was being taught out of date skills on out of date systems, I left, I got a job, I am now qualified in my field beyond masters level, all self funded.

You're not wrong. My parents were just above the boundary so I didn't get a grant or bursary too, meaning I got the minimum loan to pay off my bills and food etc, but my parents were in no position to support me financially.

I couldn't disagree more strongly. Education should be about realising your full potential.
